Force and Motion Review Unit 6 Review M. Phillips November 2011
Unit 6 Overview • Potential and Kinetic Energy • Compare and contrast • Unbalanced Forces • Describe changes in motion • Average Speed • Speed = distance divided by time • Graphing Motion • Simple Machines • Inclined planes and pulleys
Potential vs Kinetic Energy • Potential energy is energy of position or stored energy. • Affected by mass and position • Kinetic energy is energy of motion. • Affected by mass and speed • Greater the mass and speed, greater kinetic energy
Potential vs Kinetic Energy • Click on the link and watch the the animation on potential and kinetic energy. After watching the animation answer the question at the bottom of this page. • http://wps.prenhall.com/wps/media/objects/1054/1079637/media/9751.html Watch the graph beside the animation. What relationship do you see between potential and kinetic energy? They are opposite. When kinetic energy increases, potential energy decreases. When potential energy increased, kinetic energy decreases. Move the box to see the answer.
Describe changes in Motion • Force is measured in Newtons (N) • Forces (gravity, friction) affect matter. • If 2 opposing forces are balanced, the net force is zero. • Unbalanced forces is when one force overpowers another.
Describe Changes in Motion • Click on the link and watch the animation on forces. • http://www.engineeringinteract.org/resources/parkworldplot/flash/concepts/balancedandun.swf Answer the questions at the end of the animation.
Describe Changes in Motion Calculate the net force of each example. 3 N 15 N 5 N 10 N 55 N 35 N Car – 10 N to the left ; boulder – 7 N up the hill ; tug of war – 20 N to the left Move this box to reveal the answers.
Calculate Average Speed Speed = distance divided by time A. What is the average speed of the cyclist? B. What is the cyclist doing between hours 2 and 3? Answers 10 km/h stopping Move the box to reveal the answers.
Graphing Motion • Graphs can show constant speed, no change in speed, and acceleration (speeding up or slowing down). • Watch the following animation. http://resources.education.tas.gov.au/item/edres/4723cb87-afb3-a2c2-5997-45b9dfb3f086/1/ViewIMS.jsp
Graphing Motion Speed = distance divided by time A. What is the average speed of the ball? B. What number goes in the table? Answers 4 m/s 4 seconds Move the box to reveal the answers.
Inclined Planes and Pulleys • Inclined planes and pulleys can change the amount of force to move an object • Inclined planes and pulleys makes work easier but the amount of work stays the same. • Inclined Plane Video • Pulley Video
Inclined Planes and Pulleys The pulley is used to … • Change the amount of work • Weight of the object to be lifted • Lessen the amount of force needed to move an object Which statement is true? statement 2 C Move the picture to reveal the answer Move the picture to reveal the answer
