The Literary Essay Conclusions
What is the point of a conclusion? Conclusions are a very integral part of essay writing; conclusions allow the writer the opportunity to remind the reader of the importance of the essay.
A conclusion must: • Restate the thesis in a different way • Wrap up your writing in an effective way • Leave the reader with some kind of emotional response/interesting final perspective.
A Conclusion May: • Summarize • Inspire the reader to take action based on what you have written. • Be circular so that it returns to the beginning and repeats key words, ideas and phrases • Surprise the reader • Give the reader closure
A Conclusion May Not: • Introduce new ideas that belong in the body of the essay or that are unrelated • Announce what you have done, such as, “In this paper, I have explained…” • Make absolute claims, such as “I have proved that…” • Use words or phrases such as “finally”, “thus”, or the worst ever, “in conclusion”.
Conclusion Examples Based on an essay written on plagiarism.
Please note:- The use of quotation to support the closing argument- Leaves the reader something to think about in the last sentence. The cheating and plagiarism problem among youngsters has become too serious to be neglected. The problem didn’t happen yesterday; students didn’t invent cheating. They have learned it from society. Dr. McCabe, a professor at Rutgers University said that he was struck by “how readily students place the blame for their cheating on societal problems and pressures.” As harsh as the accusation might be, being a member of the society, we can’t and shouldn’t escape the responsibility.
Please Note:The writer anticipates her reader's possible objection by adding a last comment after her remedy. It is always a good idea to think about what ways a reader may react to your words. The number of youngsters who cheat has increased to an undesirable degree. Parents should not ignore this problem; instead, they should try to convince their children that cheating has grave consequences and is totally unnecessary. Parents need to be more patient with their child’s academic progress, and set a reasonable goal for them to achieve. Though being honest might seem to be disadvantageous, in the long run, it will prove to be worthwhile.
