6. “D” Grades UC and CSU campuses consider a D grade in a required subject a Subject Omission. Students who have received a D grade in a required course need to repeat the course in order to be eligible to apply to a UC or CSU campus… HOWEVER…there are exceptions… • Math • World Languages *See your counselor for specific information*

Resources in the College and Career Center (CCC) • Access to computers to use NAVIANCE program • College resources & materials • College Admission Testing resources & materials • Financial Aid information • Career related information • Military resources • Summer programs and travel abroad programs • Host college visits from over 100 College and University representatives primarily during the fall semester • Special programming events

College Visits in the CCC • Get an insiders view of the college and a flavor of the school • Chance for a representative to “put a face with a name” • Often the college representative is the reader for our region • Representatives offer insight into the application process • A chance for students to ask direct questions to representative • College representatives often give students their contact information and offer assistance during the application process • Demonstrated interest! Over 100 visits have already been scheduled for this year!

Finding a match… • Know yourself…Identify the priorities for you and your family • Look for schools that match your student’s strengths and learning style • Location, Location, Location • Size and Type of School • Research! • Visit colleges • Be realistic and maintain perspective • Remember, 84% of all colleges accept more than 50% of the students who apply to them, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

An application tip… In an admissions report from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Education Council the following reminder was given to future applicants: “People do not apply to colleges: folders do. The folder and application are the single opportunity to influence the process. Approach each aspect of the application as an opportunity. Devote time and thought to each of the various portions.”

Community College • 2 year college, students can receive an Associate degree, pursue an applied career path, or choose to transfer to a 4 year University. • Some California CC’s offer off campus housing, refer to NAVIANCE for a complete list. • 123 California Community Colleges. • Representatives from MiraCosta CC are on our campus each week to meet with students.

17. 6 Reasons to Consider Community College • You are short on college funds • You are not sure about college. • You are not sure what kind of program you want to pursue. • Your GPA is not so great and you want to build your skills before transferring. • You’d like a career-oriented degree, such as a fashion-design or computer-certification program. • You work, or have commitments, and need a flexible schedule. Check with colleges for program details.

California State Universities (CSU) • 23 campuses • Service Area: CSU San Marcos • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.csumentor.edu • Students are evaluated through eligibility index: SAT (V&M) + (800 x GPA*) = 2900 or above (10 x composite ACT score) + (200 x GPA*) = 694 or above * 10-12 GPA

Students should check with individual campuses to determine admission requirements & deadlines 4. Many campuses use the Common Application (Visit www.commonapp.org and see next slide…) 5. Definitions of Admission Options • Regular Decision: submit application by institution’s specified date and receives a decision within a stated period of time. • Rolling Admission: institution reviews applications as they are completed and renders admissions decisions to students throughout the admissions cycle. • Early Action (EA): students apply early to an institution of preference and receive a decision in advance of the regular response date. Students admitted under EA are not obligated to accept the offer of admission. • Restrictive Early Action (REA): Students may apply early to only one University, admission is non binding. • Early Decision (ED): students make a commitment to a first-choice institution, where, if admitted, they definitely will enroll. When applying ED, student may apply to other institutions, but may only have one ED application pending. Students should check with individual schools regarding specific policies in the Early Decision agreement.

Prospective College Athletes NCAA Eligibility Center: 1.Students need to register online @ www.eligibilitycenter.org 2.Ensure students are meeting the NCAA course requirements. • Student athletes may no longer enroll in BYU Online courses in order to meet NCAA Division I core course requirements. Students previously enrolled in BYU Online courses must have completed all course work, including final exams, and have a final grade posted by July 30, 2010. 3.Students need to bring signed FERPA form, found on NAVIANCE, and stamped & addressed envelope to TPHS Registrar.

Letter of Recommendation Request Deadlines • For Early Admissions: • September 28th • The deadline to request and submit your brag packet for a LOR for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 1st 2012 or before. • For Regular Admissions: • October 31st • The deadline to request and submit your brag packet for a LOR for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 2nd 2012 or after.

33. The role of the PARENT… • Breathe • Assist your student in creating a BALANCED and REALISTIC list of colleges. • Complete Parent Portion of LOR Brag Packet. Question # 37: “What would you want the admissions office to know about your child that they could not learn from your student's school records and/or college application?” • Assist your student in any payments needed (i.e. sending test scores, application fees). • Breathe
