Job Duties & Responsibilities • Analyze the effects of drugs on cells, animals, humans or the environment • Promote appropriate use of a drug • Conduct experiments to learn about a compound • Use computers to collect and analyze data • Apply research results to new products • Prepare proposals for future tests • Supervise duties of technical staff • Train junior pharmacologists • Direct administrative work • At times, write papers or speak at conferences
Qualities and Skills • Diligent, perseverant and creative • Imagination and problem-solving skills are important to the task of researching • Have solid analytical skills • Patience and accuracy • Must work well with or without a team • Organization, orientation to detail and methodical thinking are also typical traits
Salary Earn between $59,000 and $72,000 a year, depending on the area of employment and years of experience. Entry level pharmacologists may earn anywhere from $30,000 to $45,000 a year. Clinical pharmacologists and those with supervisory tasks can earn over $100,000 a year.
Work Environment • Most work is done indoors in laboratories or classroom settings • Typically work 40 hours a week, but may spend additional hours completing a research project or assignment • May work with a team or individually
Education A course of study leading to a Ph.D. in pharmacology, taking four to five years after earning a bachelor’s degree. Pharmacology and the practice of medicine are closely related and some pharmacologists become medical doctors or vise versa. Pharmacologists are highly trained individuals who must have a good understanding and knowledge of chemistry, biology, physiology, and mathematics.
