Four Part Basketball System • Kenny Hill basketball is all about the four part system which consists of preseason, season, spring and summer. It is a continuous cycle that student-athletes will enter in the ninth grade and finish as a senior in their last game. This four part system is about player development, physically, mentally and academically.
#1 Pre-Season • Pre-Season will last from the first day of school until the first practice in October. The pre-season consists of conditioning and preparing for the upcoming season. It will be one of the most grueling parts of the system. Student-athletes will run, lift weights, and participate in various agility drills to prepare them for the basketball season. Also during this time, the coaching staff will ensure that all student-athletes are acclimated to their class schedules and begin the new school year on the right track. I will e-mail each of my player’s teachers and ask that they notify me if there are any concerns or potential problems (academic or behavior) before they arise. This will also be the time that student-athletes write down there shoe, shirt, and jumpsuit sizes. Parents will be notified of how much they will have to pay for the items that we order. I believe in the team concept, and every player will wear the same shoes, jump suit, etc. This information will be sent out during the first week of school and the order will be placed the week after Labor Day. Players with financial issues will be given a payment plan.
Pre-Season Cont. Example of a Pre-Season Weekly Schedule • Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: Conditioning and Agility Drills • Monday, Thursday: Weight Training (4 main core lifts will include bench-press, incline, power clean, and lunges.

Pre-Season Cont.Example Conditioning and Agility day • Stretch • 8 minute run or Jump ropes • Ladder drills • Jump Boxes • Medicine ball circuit (toss, squat, slides, backboard touches) • 110 sprints with and without parachutes
#2 The Season • The season runs from the first day of practice in October to the last game in February or March. During the season we will continue to do our pre-season workouts. Once the games start, we will only lift once a week and we will enter maintenance training only. Some days during our 1st block WT class will be used watching film and/or maintaining our academics(It is very important to me that the players have extra time for school work on game days). We will also use this time to get up extra shots and free throws.
The Season Continued • Practice is the most important part of the season. We will start off in October with our first practices being two-a-days. We will practice in the morning from 6:00-7:15 and again after school from 3:30-6:00. We will do that for the 1st two weeks. Once we go to one-a-day practices, 85%-90% of them will be after school. The other 10%-15% will be early morning practices. The next slide will be a sample practice schedule.
Sample Practice Schedule • 3:30-3:37 or 3:40 – stretch • 3:40-3:45- easy run or 8 min run • 3:45-3:47 Water break • 3:47-3:50- close-out and defensive slide drill • 3:50-3:55- Partner passing • 3:55-4:05- Ball handling • 4:05-4:15- Zig-zag dribble fullcourt with shots • 4:15-4:25- perfect lay-ups • 4:25-4:35- 3-on-0 • 4:35-4:45- 3-on-2 / 2-on-1 • 4:45-4:50 - Conditioning (Pyramid) • 4:50-4:59 – 3 man shooting • 4:59-5:02 – make 2 free throws in a row • 5:02-5:05 – water break • 5:05-5:25 – team offense station • 5:25-5:45 – team defense • 5:45-6:00 – Live play 5-on-5 (obviously this time will increase as we get closer to the season) • 6:00-6:05 – Free throw challenge to determine running • 6:10 – Announcements, Break it and take it to the house
The Season ContinuedGame Day Home Game Day – No Tourney Away Game Day – No tourney All players will wear travel team jump suits to all away games. There will be a few away games (TBD) where the team will wear shirt, tie, slacks, and dress shoes. We will eat the Pre-game meal 30 minutes before we leave. Times TBA. Because we usually share the same locker room as the girls for away games, we will enter the locker room after halftime. • All players will wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks or khakis, and dress shoes. • Players will report to the cafeteria or eating destination at 4:15(game starts at 7:30) for the pre-game meal. • After eating all players must return to the gym by 5:45 to support the girls. All players will sit in a designated area TBD at a later date. At the end of the 1st quarter the team will enter the locker room to get dressed. Once everyone has dressed, we will go as a team to the auxiliary gym to warm-up and go over the game plan. • At the end of the 3rd quarter we will head back to the locker room to focus, rest, and hear my pre-game speech.
#3 The Spring • The spring begins one week after the last game of the season. The spring is almost identical to the Pre-season. We do the same workouts, except we lift 3 days per week and we will do conditioning/agilities twice per week. We also have our sports banquet during this time. The coaching staff will also attend a coaching clinic(TBD Later) in late April or early May. The spring will end with 5 days of spring evaluation, tentatively scheduled for May 14-18.
#4 The Summer • The summer runs from June 1st or the Monday after Memorial Day until the last week of July. The summer consists of practice, weight training, conditioning, agilities, individuals(offensive moves), and 7 days of athletic competition (team camps and play dates). The weight training, conditioning, and agilities will mimic what we do in the pre-season and spring. The next slide will show you a typical week in the summer.
The Summer ContinuedWeekly Schedule • Monday and Thursday – 9:00-11:00 Weights and individuals (non football players only)…1:00-3:00 – team practice(everybody) • Tuesday and Thursday – 9:00-11:00 Conditioning and weight training…1:00-3:00 – Team practice. • Friday – Off day or headed to team camp. All players will have the opportunity to come and work on his individual game on Friday’s from 9:00-12:00.
Offensive Philosophy • My overall offensive philosophy is speed and a up tempo style of play. We want to run our secondary break on made and missed baskets. The goal is to get the ball past half court in 2-3 seconds. This puts tremendous pressure on the opposing team’s transition defense. I would like to get a quick easy or open shot. If not then we will run through our options off the break, call a set play(pinch, blue devil, jazz, horns, head-tap, etc) or run our base offense (motion or flex). Inbounds plays (sideline or underneath) are a part of my offense. We will run three formations with two plays for each formation. My goal is to get an open shot or lay-up 90% of the time and convert on 50%-60%. Teams that score consistently on inbounds plays win games. Overall my offensive philosophy involves getting the ball in the hands of the players that can handle the ball and score, and we want to do it fast with minimal turnovers.
Defensive Philosophy • Pressure, pressure, and more pressure! I want to pick people up full court. Force them to work offensively and try to make them run there offense without the PG. I am a ball defensive guy (man-to-man). I teach players to play defense in relationship to the ball and man. The ball and man that you are guarding determines what you do. I believe in taking charges not blocking shots. The only time I want guys blocking shots is when they are helping. In other words my players should only contest the shots of the players they are guarding, but they may block the shots of other players in a help side role. If we are over-matched, I will run two different match-up zones(1-2-2 and 1-3-1). I have two full court presses (one-world with a shortstop and Diamond) and two ¾ - ½ court presses (wildcat and 22). My philosophy involves pressure and keeping teams off balance. One thing that I like to do is change defenses every time we shoot free throws. If we are doing well, then I will not change the defense.
Fundraising • Our fundraisers will remain the same. We use season ticket sales, program ads, gate money, and the shoot-a-thon as our main fundraisers. • We have obviously taken private donations in the past and we will not shy away from accepting those. The EHS basketball program will not make it a common practice to ask for such donations. We are going to work for what we get. • I am also exploring the idea of having a spring alumni game. I would like to have former players from the 90’s decade take on the 2000’s decade in a basketball game. If possible I would like to have a doubleheader. The 1st game would be the 80’s and 60’s decade playing the 70’s decade. I would also like for former cheerleaders to cheer for there decade team. We would also bring back former coaches. I believe it would be a great time and a reunion of sorts. I assume that we could make a decent gate from such an event. I would use all forms of media and technology to sell this event. If the event were approved by Dr. Millner, the date would be a Friday evening in mid April. • My plan is to keep Coach Chambers over the gate and possibly look at finding a sports savvy faculty member to run the clock.
Relationship with assistant coaches and Duties • As a head coach I want to provide a great working environment for my assistants. I want them to be able to coach and teach the game they love. I also want to provide a mentorship to them, so that one day they will be able to grow and advance in the business. • I believe in communicating exactly what I want my coaches to do in advance. If I need to teach them something or show them something, then that is what I will do. I don’t want my coaches wondering what we are going to do. The next slide shows a list of coaching duties that the head assistant and JV coach are responsible for.
Coaching Duties • Coach Brian Weeden • All coaches need to be at the gym at least 30 minutes before practice. • All coaches need to talk to players individually about working on there game with you after practice. Mentor them so they will become better. • Offensive Plays and Individual Instruction (New Zone and Man Plays-Quick Hitters) • Post-player development • Keep record of Fouls, Time outs for both teams, and Dry Erase Board • Fill out Score Book before Game • Supervise Film Crew: Get Film Ready for game and get tape after game • Assist me in film review with team • Physicals/Permission Forms for all Players (Take to all Games) • Shooting Drills (Gun Shooting System) • Report all scores immediately after the game to: • David Mundee (Dothan Eagle Sports) # 792-3141 • Andy Leonard (Southeast Sun) # 205-454-5723 • Montgomery Advertiser (Sports) # 262-1611 • Update all scores to the AHSAA.com website immediately after all home games • Update stats, schedule, wins and losses to Max prep sports website weekly. • Make sure you have read the emergency basketball plan and that you know what to do.
Coaching duties continued • Coach TBD – JV Coach • All coaches need to be at the gym at least 30 minutes before practice. • All coaches need to talk to players individually about working on there game with you after practice. Mentor them so they will become better. • Get out all equipment for practice (Balls, cones, etc) • Make sure that all doors are closed and locked in the Gym area after Practice. • Make sure all equipment is placed in the closet and locked after practice. Balls & cones • Guard Moves and Individual Game • Assist me in film review • Keep Record of Stats during game (Defensive Stats) • Supervise Managers: Medicine kit, Towels, Balls, etc. • Supervise players during warm-ups and while in locker rooms before game • Zone/Match up Defenses, Guard Development • Cut off lights in the gym, locker room, etc • Supervise Study Hall after school (Rotate with Coaching Staff) • Varsity/JV/Freshman Locker Room Check after practice and game. Make sure all players are gone after practice and game.(Rotate with Coaching Staff). • Make sure the bench players are focused and paying attention to the game. • Make sure you have read the emergency basketball plan and that you know what to do.
Discipline • I believe in discipline. I believe that 90% of discipline can be handled with running and loss of playing time. I will handle all discipline internally and only the student-athlete, parent/guardian, and principal will be notified of what took place and the consequence. Academics are very important and any student-athlete that is failing a class will devote his time to that class and not basketball. Once his grade has reached a passing level he may rejoin the team for practice and games. • No player will be allowed to participate in the game if he does not follow the game day dress code. • All verbal and aggressive technical fouls will result in a one game suspension. A 2nd tech will result in a two game suspension, and a 3rd tech will result in dismissal from the team. Keep in mind that hanging on the rim, intentional fouls, flopping, calling time-outs without having any are all technical fouls that will not warrant a one game suspension but will be punished with extra running. • Any player that is suspended from school will also be suspended from one game once they return to school. Any games that they miss during the time of the suspension will not count toward the one game of suspension once they return to school. A second suspension from school will result in an indefinite suspension from the basketball team. • Any write-ups or emails from teachers will result in extra running. If the problem persists, then it could lead to a one game suspension. • Unexcused tardy will result in extra running . Unexcused absence from practice will result in a one game suspension. • It is my expectation that all EHS basketball players will carry themselves with class and represent the city of Enterprise in a positive way.
Senior Leadership Council • As a player I was always a leader. Teams with great leadership usually do well in sports. My goal is to start a senior leadership council for the basketball program. The council will be comprised of senior players on the team and possibly a underclassman. I will meet with them 2-3 times a week after practice. My goal is to teach them to be leaders and take part in the control of there team. They will be able to ask me questions and tell me there concerns. I will be able to critique there leadership. The areas that we will concentrate on are stretching, finishing practice strong, maintaining focus especially on game day, locker room etiquette, bus behavior, and staying positive when things aren’t going so well. I truly believe that this council will be beneficial to the EHS Basketball Program.
The Future Growth of the Basketball Program • First and foremost, it is important that the EHS Basketball Family grows as a unit. Once a kid goes through this program he is a lifelong member of our family and is always welcome to come back. Examples include Michael Lee, Joe Davis, etc. I also want to grow it from the bottom and reach out to the younger kids in the community. • The Fundamentally Sound Basketball Camp will still take place the 1st week in June every year. It will be for ages 6-13. • I also want to designate Monday’s and Wednesday’s in the summer as days that rising 2nd-6th graders can come to EHS Gym and receive coaching from our staff. They will be able to come from 10-12 on those two days. • I also want be heavily involved with the rising 7th – 9th graders. My goal is to be at there spring evaluations and help the coaches of those programs get on the same page as the Varsity program. I would also like to see these teams go to Birmingham Southern Middle School Camps each summer. I’d like to see them practicing 2 times a week. I want the gyms open, and I’m going to extend the invitation for the Jr. high coaches to come and to our gym once a week and play each other. They get seven days of live competition and Birmingham Southern will only be two days. That gives Coppinville, Old Jr., and Dauphin 5 days of scrimmage time. They have not been using these days effectively. I am going to make sure that the basketball players in Enterprise are getting a full spring and summer of basketball in. It’s time to go to work. I am the best guy for the job at Enterprise High School. Go Cats!!!
