Self to Selfless: Take the First Step to True Service Learning • Foot Activity: Write down one “Passion” you have on the “Foot” provided on your table. • Your Passion should be something that you love to do! Something that gets you motivated! (Talent, Skill or Hobby) • Introduce yourself with your shoulder partners and share your passions with one another.
Workshop Objectives • Connecting passions to Service Learning to motivate students to participate in service learning • Understand the steps to Service Learning • Develop classroom Service Learning projects using the resource: Cooking Together/Cooking Forever
What is Service Learning? • Service learning is a deliberate process through which people of all ages, including teens, develop specific skills, knowledge and behaviors while making meaningful contributions to their communities and developing civic awareness. Resource: YMCA
What is Service Learning? • The process includes three core components: • Establishing Learning Objectives • Performing Meaningful Service • Engaging in Structured Reflection
Connecting Passions to Service Learning • Step 1: Complete “Personal Profile” handout provided at your table • Step 2: Link Profile to Service Learning by discussing with a partner how your answers (talents, skills and passions connect to a Service Topic)
Service Topic Areas • Education • Health & Wellness • Prevention • Economics • Environmental • Safety
Link Your Passion • On the “Foot” write down which Service Learning topic area best connects with your “Passion”. Glue your “Passion Foot” to your “Service Learning Foot” and move to the table that is marked with your Service Learning Topic Area.
