  3. Why Catalog? We catalog so that a patron or staff member can • Find a resource by • Author and title, or • Title alone, or • Title substitute, and • Which resources by a particular author, and • Which editions of a particular resource are available. ILA Region 2 Spring Conference, May 4, 2007

AACR2 & MARC • International standards that allow record sharing and exchange • AACR2: Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules Description = record content • MARC: MAchine Readable Cataloging Machine-readable coding = markup on information for computer manipulation • If you're going to catalog, you need access to both of these resources.   15. Record ID Numbers When you bring a new record into the system do not delete the 010 Library of Congress Control Number 035 System control number These are important matching points for duplicate detection and catalog maintenance. ILA Region 2 Spring Conference, May 4, 2007

  16. Now that you're ready to catalog,decide what you have • How is the resource issued? • What is its format? • Does it have accompanying material? • Which chapter(s) of AACR2 should be consulted? • Which MARC format should be used? ILA Region 2 Spring Conference, May 4, 2007

  17. Search databases • Search your library’s shared online catalog (VALNet, NIAL, etc.) • Search your source(s) for cataloging copy (OCLC, LC online catalog, etc.) ILA Region 2 Spring Conference, May 4, 2007

Either you find a record that fits • Accept/Edit existing bibliographic record • In shared catalog, try to keep editing to minimum • OK to correct mistakes, or to enhance by adding important information • If you're unsure, OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards chapter 4 can help you decide whether you need to create a new record http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/input/default.shtm ILA Region 2 Spring Conference, May 4, 2007

OR You find one that doesn't fit, but is close • Derive a new record • "Derive" is the OCLC command for creating a new record by taking a record for a similar item, re-using the parts that match, and changing those that don't match to fit your piece. • Be sure to remove any information that doesn't fit your piece!
