  1. Using the Landscape Management System (LMS) on the Colville Reservation Colville Confederated Tribes Natural Resources Department McAllister Helicopter Project

  2. What is LMS? • Evolving set of software tools designed to aid in landscape level management of forest resources. • Cooperative between the Silviculture Laboratory, College of Forest Resources, University of Washington, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Forest Service, State & Private Forestry.

  3. Further Description • Integrates forest inventory information, geographic information, growth models, decision support systems, and other applications. • Coordinates execution and information flow between many different computer programs (+60). • LMS projects changes in individual stands and landscapes up to 50,000 acres. • LMS can be used for management, planning, policy making and education.

  4. LMS designed w/ following features: • Modular • Incorporates many forms of inventory data, geographic information, computerized growth models, and decision support systems. • Flexible • LMS works with a representative tree list. • Easy to Use • Microsoft Windows application. Incorporates MS Access & Excel • Projects Growth • LMS projects growth at the stand level using existing growth models. Changes in stand can be projected over time under different management regimes. • Presents Visualization • LMS in concert with SVS and Envision provides visualizations of the projected stands.

  5. McAllister Helicopter Project • Helicopter logging on approximately 1600 acres. • Classified as inoperable ground because of inaccessibility for conventional logging methods. • Harvest high risk volume, improve forest /ecosystem health, reduce hazardous fuels, provide additional revenues to Tribe.

  6. McAllister Project Layout • Display in ArcMap & ArcScene

  7. Steps to using LMS • Create stand boundaries & other GIS layers. • Collect sample inventory plots (variable & fixed) within selected stands. • Collect silvicultural prescription information for selected stand(s). • Create photo-points from strategic locations. • Create digital terrain model using DEM’s.
