  3. Project Name:“SMILE” (Supporting Maternal and Child Health Improvement and Literate Environments)

Overall Objective: • To improve the literacy situation in the Asia-Pacific region. • Immediate Objectives: • To improve women’s literacy situation • To build the literate home environments • To build the literate community environments • To promote the literacy education of female learners’ family members and children • To improve the health condition of pregnant women and mothers • To improve the health condition of children

Primary Target Population: • Illiterate and neo-literate pregnant women and mothers having children aged 0-5 • Outlines of Project: • To organize literacy classes integrating basic health education and primary health care services for illiterate and neo-literate pregnant women and mothers (and possibly for their male partners), in coordination with health institutions/workers.

To develop the literacy material with which learners can learn about the basic health care for mothers and children and practice their writing and numeracy skills by keeping basic information and health check records of mothers and children. Maternal and Child Health Handbook may be utilized with necessary modifications to make them more appropriate for literacy learners. (Please see the attached PDF file of some pages of Indonesia’s MCH Handbook as an example.) The material will be utilized together with the existing literacy primers and other learning materials focusing on specific topics. • To develop the literacy material • with which learners can learn about the basic health care for mothers and children and practice their writing and numeracy skills by keeping basic information and health check records of mothers and children. Maternal and Child Health Handbook may be utilized with necessary modifications to make them more appropriate for literacy learners. The material will be utilized together with the existing literacy primers and other learning materials focusing on specific topics.

OBJECTIVES OF CLC’S (Community Learning Centers) • Promotion of education and skills • To resolve problems of everyday life • Awareness of basic rights • Efforts for better economic status • Participation in social activities • To improve the family environment through positive thinking and practical education

  12. ACTIVITIES OF CLC • Adult education • Income generating skills • Computer education • Opportunities for men and women to get information environment and health • Programs for the development of community and culture

UNICEF and Pakistan Girl Guide Association join hands to launch a program to improve the status of the Pakistani girl child • OBJECTIVES: • to raise awareness among all segments of society on their responsibilities towards fulfilling the rights of children • to improve significant status of women • KEYS AREAS : • Health/ sanitation • Nutrition • Education • Girl child issue • Child rights

Communication Kits and Material Developed & produced on Girl Child Shield and Empowerment of Girl Projects • (Guide Booklets and Leaders Manuals and IEC for Media and Parents) • 98,025 guides in schools trained for CRC awareness program • 9,160 guides and peer educators trained in LSBE • 429,125 girls sensitized in CRC and LSBE through guides and peer educators in schools, families and communities from 1995 – 2007 • 1,051 elementary, high and higher secondary schools for girls participated in both the projects from 1995 – 2007 • 600 teachers, 160 heads / officials and member’s NGO’s trained / sensitized in LSBE 70 master trainers trained in LSBE in districts and at provincial headquarters 399,125 girls sensitized in reproductive health, child abuse, HIV & aids and preventive education • Girl Guides were selected to work as peer educators, facilitators and young champions at provincial and national level by UNICEF. • Guides have represented at child / youth forums, seminars, camps arranged in Lahore, Islamabad, Katmandu, Colombo, London and India to share their experiences of the projects ACHIEVEMENTS

Peer Groups were formed in schools to work with guides to disseminate the knowledge and skills to peers and adolescents. • The Teachers Resource Groups will also continue training the girls. • The sensitization of Heads of Institutions and Officials are expected to bring about a change in the school environment, teacher – student relationship and interaction with parents and community. • The training Material developed under the project is a good resource material for both teachers and girls.   22. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN PGGA and Pakistan PINK RIBBON campaign joined hands to spread awareness among the young women of Pakistan about the fatal disease
