  1. AGENDA • Assessment/Comprehension: Exam…Tomorrow! • UNIT – 6: Lesson/PPT • UNIT – 5D: Know your “Network”! • Prep Performance… • Tech Manual: Inspection…Friday! (Up to 5C)

  2. DO NOW… • What are some “Modem types” used to deliver internet access via computers? (Modems are often said to be Transceivers)

  3. MODEM & TRANSCEIVER TYPES • ISDN • DSL • T-Lines • POTS • Cable (high speed) • ONT (optical network terminal)

  4. Aim…? • What is the operation of Modems and Transceivers with computers?

  5. MODEMS & TRANSCEIVERS • A modem is a device that is used to convert serial data from a computer to an audio signal for transmission over telephone lines and vice versa. • A transceiver is any device capable of transmitting and receiving analog or digital signals. • Modem types are therefore said to be transceivers.

  6. The Modem Construction • Universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) - changes parallel data to serial data and vice versa. • Modulator/demodulator - handles the conversion of analog and digital signals. • The controller - coordinates the entire operation. • RAM - serves as a buffer (similar to the printer queue)

  7. must know Modem Commands • RTS = request to send • CTS = clear to send • ATZ = resets the modem

  8. Internet connection (the home user) • Typically installed using a wizard • Common info needed for setup includes the following; • ISP/telephone # • User ID & Password • ISP connection protocol

  9. INTERNET CONNECTION TYPES • Modem (POTS/internal): Plain-O-telephone-systems • ISDN: Integrated Service Digital Network • DSL: Digital Subscriber Line • Cable Modem: Provides high speed internet access using lines designed for cable television. • Fiber Optic: Currently the fastest data transfer signal for internet service (FC, SC, ST)

  10. Satellite: provides a constant connection to the internet (DTR downstream is faster then data upstream) • T- Lines: (T1,2,3) Carries voice and data at higher rates then traditional phone lines.

  11. MODEM must know TERMS AND DEFINITIONS • Bandwidth - the range of data a component or cable is designed to carry. • Baud-Rate - the rate of analog frequency. • ISP - internet service provider. • Protocol - a set of rules between two computers or devices for describing how to transmit data.

  12. MODEM TROUBLESHOOTING • POTS: No internet access??? • Be sure there is a dial tone at the phone • Be sure internet connecting software is installed (AOL/Net zero) • Be sure RJ-11 connectors are correct

  13. Cable modem: No internet access??? • Pay your bill (LOL) • Check software installation • Check connections (modem, router, computer) • Refresh all components (sequence matters)

  14. Any Questions…? • Decode the following; • RTS • FC • POTS • DSL • ISDN • SC • ISP • UART
