Communicable Disease • A disease that can be passed to a person from another person, animal, or object.
Pathogens • Disease-causing organisms that are so small they can only be seen through a microscope.
Types of Pathogens • Bacteria- tiny one-celled organisms • Viruses- smallest pathogens • Fungi- more complex bacteria, but cannot make their own food • Protozoa- one-celled organisms that can make their own food
Examples of Pathogens • Bacteria- Pink Eye, Strep throat, Lyme Disease • Viruses- Colds, Chicken Pox, Fever, Polio, Rabies • Fungi- Athletes Foot, Ringworm • Protozoa- Malaria
Vector • An organism, such as an insect, that transmits pathogens.
