1. No Cell phone for 31hours, 2 • Start 5:00pm 4/23/2012 • End 12:00am 4/24/2012 • Analysis: It was difficult to not use my cell phone in 31 hours but, I survived. I do not use my cell phone excessively but, I do use it on a day to day basis. It was an interesting experiment that did require a little effort. The picture is of the same model as my cell phone.
2. No Media for a Week, 3 • Start 4/23/2012 • End 4/30/2012 • Analysis: Going without media is a hard thing for me to do. I constantly watch the news and even have feed updates on my laptop. I did have to cheat once but, I still stayed true to it. The media is what keeps people connected and is therefore hard to restrict. With that said, it is possible to keep the media out of our lives but not entirely or for a long period of time.
No Media (Cont.) • My day to day schedule consists of approximately 2 hours of television a day and about 3 hours on the computer. I have several news update feeds on my computer and even on my phone. It was very strenuous to go without using some form of media, mainly because the media is inevitable and such a part of our lives.
3. Go Without Transportation for a Day, 13 • Start 4/23/2012 • End 4/28/2012 • I started the day by getting ready for school and going out to the bus. I stayed at school, no transportation. At the end of the day I rode the bus home(when I don’t have a meeting or practice). I got home and when to the store in the car and drove back. I used transportation four times.
3. Transportation (Cont.), 13 • I had to bend the rules on the second part to make it on the weekend that way I can actually come to school. On that Saturday I stayed at home working and studying for upcoming exams, tests, and work that would be due. While I got a lot accomplished it was boring staying at home all day at my desk.
4. Create an Expressive Act, 21 • I decided to create an acrostic poem Social Capital. Social Civil Obedience Absence Costs Persuades Identity Individuals And To become Liberty. Aliketo Lassiez Faire
5. Six Items or Less, 22 • Start 4/23/2012 • End 4/29/2012 • Analysis: Six items or less, sounds like a grocery store checkout line, and in some ways it is. The challenge was to wear only six clothes excluding underwear(fortunately) for a week. The challenge wasn’t extremely difficult for me because I’m a guy and I don’t wear a ton of clothes. However, the challenge did present a few problems, which I put on the next slide as well as what I wore.
Six Items or Less (Cont.) • This is what I wore: • Khaki shorts • Khaki Pants • Buttoned Shirt • 3 Different Polo Shirts • Note: I did have to cheat because we had a band concert and I had to wear a tuxedo.
Conclusions • The labs required a fair amount of sacrifice which entails a decent amount work and was appropriately challenging. The labs were difficult sometimes and were an interesting way to find out about ourselves.
