Role in Christianity • Judas agreed to betray Jesus by handing him over to the chief priests to be murdered • He would reveal Jesus’s identity with a kiss on the cheek, known as ( the kiss of Judas) • In return the chief priests gave Judas 30 pieces of silver • In the gospel of Matthew, when Judas went to the chief priests he asked “ what will you give me if I deliver Jesus to you?” (26:15) • In the gospel of John, after Jesus gives Judas a piece of dipped bread, it says “ Satan entered into him” (13:27)
Life after betrayal • According to the gospel of Matthew, Judas repented his betrayal, returned the coins to the chief priests and committed suicide by hanging himself
Gospel of Judas • A document written on papyrus was discovered in a cave, in el Minya, Egypt, in the 1970’s • The document was assembled, and then translated over a number of years and then released to the public in 2006 • In it, it states that Jesus asked Judas to turn him in, because Jesus thought Judas would free him from his earthly shell so he could ascend into heaven. • This act would set Judas aside from the other disciples and assure him a place above them in heaven
