  3. What Is Streaming Video? • Streaming video is a sequence of "moving images" that are sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer as they arrive. • Streaming media is streaming video with sound.

  4. What Is A Player? • A special program that uncompresses and sends video data to the display and audio data to speakers. • A player can be either an integral part of a browser or downloaded from the software maker's Web site.

  5. Different Types of Players • Real Player • Microsoft Windows Media Player • Apple-QuickTime

  6. Two Methods of Streaming • Progressive is the easiest to deal with technically as it is placed on the Web as a direct download. It also has a better quality than Real Time. However the user has to download the whole file before playing and, once downloaded, the user has no control over jumping ahead. • Real Time allows the user to view the video as it downloads directly from the Internet and allows the user to jump to what ever section they want. This works well for longer videos such as news broadcast or informative instruction videos.

  7. Facts About Streaming Video • Streaming video is usually sent from prerecorded video files, but can be distributed as part of a live broadcast "feed." • During a live broadcast, the video signal is converted into a compressed digital signal and transmitted from a special Web server that is able to do multicasts, sending the same file to multiple users at the same time. 1 1 http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0%2C%2Csid7_gci213055%2C00.html

  8. Affect on the TV Industry? • Streaming video is a compliment to local TV stations because it allows stations to reach their viewers through an additional channel and at times when they would not necessarily have access to a television

  9. Affect on the Movie Industry? • The movie industry has been much more concerned about digital rights management than other content providers.

  10. How Companies Are Changing To Adapt? • The movie industry is now comfortable with that aspect of streaming video and are embracing the opportunity as well.

  11. Future Direction of Subject • Streaming video is increasing in popularity and allows anything from news telecasts to full-length movies to be shown over the Internet. • As more people have access to broadband Internet access, the availability of the services greatly increase. 2 3 2 http://www.sdcn.org/webworks/design/video.htm http://www.sdcn.org/webworks/design/video.htm 3
