The International Lead and Zinc Study Group • Established within UN in 1959 • Its aim: To promote a free flow of information on lead and zinc • 29 member countries • Three areas of key interest: • market transparency, • market analysis, • forum between governments and industry • Representing 90% of world lead & zinc mine & metal production and consumption

4. Objectives/Activities of the Study Group • Forum for consultation • Enhance transparency in the global lead and zinc markets through: • The provision of accurate and timely statistics • The publication of detailed and relevant studies • The maintenance of a comprehensive network of contacts

Objectives/Activities (cont’d) • Facilitate communication between relevant players in environment, recycling, sustainability and economic development. • Sustainable Development Forum in cooperation with other Metals Study Groups • Spring Meetings (50-100 persons) and October Sessions (250-300 persons): • Excellent opportunities for contact between all players (producers, consumers, governments and industry)

6. Objectives/Activities (cont’d) • Industry Advisory Panel 13-14 representatives of the world’s major lead/zinc companies and downstream industries Provide views on and contribute to the Study Group’s work

Member Countries Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Russian Federation, Republic of South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, and United States. Potential new member countries are targeted through direct contact and through the newly introduced quarterly newsletter “The Publicity Zone”.

8. Three Study Group Committees Economic and Environment Committee: monitors and examines all developments affecting primary and secondary industries and major international economic events impacting on lead and zinc Statistical and Forecasting Committee: all statistical work including Monthly Bulletin, market forecasts and development of new electronic services. Mine and Smelter Projects Committee: provides a detailed annual study on new projects and openings and closures of mines and smelters

9. Cooperation with Common Fund for Commodities ILZSG can work with CFC to help unlock funds for projects that relate to lead and zinc - the commodities for which ILZSG is the designated International Commodity Body (ICB) In addition to the Peru RAPS project other projects include Performance of Galvanised Reinforcing Bar in Tropical Marine Conditions (India, Mexico), Zinc Die Casting (India), Zinc Hot Dipped Galvanised Steel (China)

10. Work in relation to specific member countries The Secretariat can also undertake work requested by a specific member country if this is approved by other members of the Group For example, we could undertake a study on prospects for growth in a specific region or market sector, the impact of environmental legislation, or an overview of the latest technological developments
