“What We Think of Married Life (Pg. 168-172) • He describes Susan as being humble as opposed to how he and his brother and two sisters are. • He describes his mother as being dramatic and his father as being shy. • Talks about how his mother would use them to try to get his father to stop drinking • Everyone basically separated after the divorce
Dialogues (Pg. 173-178) • He talks about the most memorable memories during the marriage • Ex. When his “daddy” lost his job and how bad he felt • Ex. When he left to England and how it was hard on his “mum”
Blind Faith (Pg.179-180) • He talks about how he wishes he understood the divorce more • He would have liked to know his father more but regardless he feels a sense of loyalty towards him
The Bone (Pg.181-182) • Mervyn’s friend tells a story about how Ondaatje’s father escaped from a train and ran naked to the jungle and was later found walking around with local dogs
“THANIKAMA”(Pg.185-189) • THANIKAMA means loneliness • This chapter is about the separation from Doris • He seems to be in denial that Doris has left him • “Objects had stayed and people disappeared.” (186) • The quote and title represent how he feels at that moment in time
Final Days Father Tongue (Pg.192-2010 • He incorporates how others remember his dad in this chapter • Ex. Jennifer remembers him as a person who could “always laugh at himself” • Ex. V.C. de Silva remembers him as a great friend who he learned a lot from.
