(Strategy for) SIS100 Dipole Magnet Procurement Peter Spiller FAIR - Machine Advisory Committee Meeting 9.5.2011
German inkind proposal for SIS100 • Delivery 1: • Preseries Dipole and Dipole Series • including cryostats, supports and vaccum chamber, tested an integrated as a whole • Delivery 2: (strongly linked and with the need of synchronisation) • Upgrade of the existing magnet test facility for the single layer coil, preseries dipole magnet • Dipole series test facility, set-up at GSI (including two test benches, power converters and cryogenic plant) • > enabling the option of setting up the string test near by
The goal is to establish the fastest process with as risks as minimum as possible.
Strategic Comments • The procurement of the SIS100 dipole series is linked to the upgrade of the existing magnet test stand and the build-up of the series test stand. • A clear guideline could be estabilished after the decision was made to separate the discussion on the dipole testing from the quadrupole and Super-FRS magnet testing ( a long phase of discussion on where to test the magnets has been conducted through the last years). • The dipole series and the magnet testing (common systems) are proposed to become german a inkind contribution, thus decision can be taken as soon as the formal steps are obtained. Without the need to consider more/other complicated boundary conditions which do not yet allow decisions. • The established project plan is the best concering its time schedule and ends already a little after the building readiness has been reached. • The project plans contains a number of risks, which may be acceptable, but have consequences in case of problems.
Immediate Actions • The agreement and permit to start the series tendering must be achieved now. • The agreement to test the dipole series at GSI and to use the Detectors Lab Building must be achieved now. • The budget for the upgrade of the existing magnet test stand must be provided now. • The tendering of the new dipole power converter and the current leads must be started now. • The tendering of the cryogenic plant for the series test stand must be started now.
Parallel Actions • The steel for the dipole chamber series must be procured in parallel to the preseries dipole production. • The wire for the s.c. cable must be procured in parallel to the preseries dipole production. • The toolings for the series production must be build in parallel to the preseries production. • The series test stand must be build up in parallel to the preseries magnet production.
Contract Strategy • The series production including the preseries magnet will be tendered. • The contract is organized in two parts: a) production of preseries dipole magnet and b) production of dipole series. • After delivery of the preseries dipole, there is a production break for half a year, which is used for testing. The second part of the contract is cancelled if major problems with the basic functionality of the preseries magnet show up. • The toolings (owned by GSI) must be stored until the problems habe been solved. • The chambers are tendered in separate and provided by GSI, giving the option to take control of the chamber quality (also for the quadrupoles by GSI). • The s.c. wire is tendered in separate and provided by GSI.
Magnet Procurement Strategy • The magnets will be deliverd assembled, including the UHV chamber. • The field measurements must be performed at GSI including the chamber. • The production time of the chambers is of the same order as of the dipoles. Thus each chamber as it is build must be send to the magnet manufacturer. • Two options for the UHV chambers are still under consideration and investigation: Pipe and conduction cooling.
Wire Procurement Strategy • The wire procurement starts with an immediate tendering of three billets from three independend manufacturer. • After the delivery (in about one year) the parameters will be compared (especially jc), the best manufacturer will be asked to produce the missing billets (12).
