Horses and Ponies You may think that horses and ponies are the same thing, but you are wrong. Ponies can grow up to 14.2 hands and horses can grow up to 14.3 hands and above. Also horses have a more graceful figure when ponies have short stubby legs.
Horse Food Horses and Ponies should be fed regularly, but if fed too often it will cause breathing problems and a strained heart. Horses and Ponies have a good appetite including fruit, vegetables, oats, barley, bran and chaff.
Training You need patience to train a horse or a pony, because it might take years. First stage of training is to walk them, then a trot, canter, jump, gallop. Horses can enter dressage competitions, show-jumping and gymkhanas.
Horse Talk Horses talk with their ears and mouth and also communicate with their body language. If horses pull their ears back they are angry or scared. If there ears go forward they are happy or interested. If there ears are floppy they are relaxed. If there ears are in the middle they are fine.
Breeds There are many breeds of horses and ponies that involve different colours, size, shape and weight. These include Arab, Shetland, Connemara, Akh’el-Teke, Lipazanner, Welsh Cob, Fell, Morgan, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Clydesdale, Fjord, Fallebella.
Glossary Gymkhanas- are a fun obstacle courses/race. Dressage- is a competition were you try to make your horse or pony look professional.
