Using the Public Internet For Communications • Microsoft introduces Edge Server technology for secure and scalable Audio, Video, and Web communication • No need for IPSEC

Internal user requests VoIP to be authenticated via a private IP address 8. Internal User and Remote User are now talking. 7. Internal User gets a public port to talk with Remote User. 6. Internal User accepts Remote User invitation to talk. 2. Remote user requests VoIP to be authenticated at a public IP address 3. External user is given a port (UDP) to communicate 1. Remote user SIP session request is authenticated 4. Remote User (SIP) invites Internal User to talk.
Why is this important? • Remote users must have a valid security certificate can be authenticated by the HTTP Reverse Proxy Server • Remote users must know the public IP address of the A/V Edge server to connect to a public UDP port • Remote users are given a different public UDP port when authenticated • Internal or External Users have the right to accept or reject the request without risk • When the conversation is finished, all ports are closed • Security risks are very low because of the dynamic nature of establishing a communication session
