The objective of Gateway Institute of Technology's Business Technology Education program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the field of business technology. The program offers courses in computer applications, entrepreneurship and e-commerce, accounting, and more. Students will develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they apply their knowledge in challenging activities. The program also offers internships and opportunities to explore careers in technology.

What is Business Technology Education? The objective of Gateway Institute of Technology Business Technology Education program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the field of business technology. As students gain knowledge, they develop skills necessary for success and build a strong foundation that enables them to become productive workers and citizens. The Business Technology Education program is designed for students that have an interest in entrepreneurship, e-commerce, accounting, marketing, and technology. The curriculum is structured to mirror the diversity within the business and technology industry and to provide instruction in the required principles, concepts, attitudes, and skills for advanced study or employment. Students will experience challenging activities and acquire critical-thinking skills as they apply problem-solving models.
Courses offered: • COMPUTER APPLICATIONS – 9-10 • INTRO TO BUSINESS – 10-12 • ADVANCED MICROSOFT APPLICATIONS – 11-12 • ACCOUNTING I and II – 11-12 • ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND E-COMMERCE – 11-12 • DESKTOP PUBLISHING/ WEB DESIGN – 11-12 • BUSINESS MANAGEMENT THEORY – 11TH GRADE – 2 CREDITS • ADVANCED BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TOPICS AND INTERNSHIP – 12TH GRADE – 4 CREDITS
Computer Applications • Computer Applications is a one-credit introductory course designed to help students master basic skills in the areas of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet, and E-mail. Students are also offered opportunities to gather information about careers in technology. • Grades 9-10 • Prerequisite: None
ACCOUNTING I and II • Accounting is a one-credit course designed to help students understand the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on analyzing and recording business transactions; preparing and interpreting financial statements, accounting systems, banking, and payroll activities; identifying basic types of business ownership; and participating in an orientation to careers in accounting. • Grades 12 • Prerequisite: Business course recommended • Articulated course
Business • Business is a practical presentation of basic business principles. Students will acquire knowledge in entrepreneurship, business ownership, types of businesses, ethics, marketing, and finance. • Grade: 10-12 • Prerequisite: Computer Applications
ADVANCED MICROSOFT APPLICATIONS • Advanced Microsoft Applications is an advanced one-credit course that provides students with project-based applications using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and the Internet. A major emphasis is placed on guiding students through real-world experiences to ease the school-to-career transition. • Grades 11 • Prerequisite: Computer Applications • Articulated Course – can receive 4 credit hours at SLCC
Entrepreneurship/ E-Commerce • Entrepreneurship and E-Commerce is a one credit specialized business course designed to provide students with the skills needed to effectively organize, develop, create, and manage a business. This course includes business management and entrepreneurship; communication and interpersonal skills; economics; and professional development foundations • Grades 12 • Prerequisite: Business Recommended
Desktop Publishing/Web Design • Desktop Publishing/Web Design is a one-credit course designed to provide students with skills involving presentations, desktop publishing, web publishing, and digital graphics. Students use various hardware peripherals as well as the Internet for integrating skills to create a variety of publications. They learn basic HTML and use Dreamweaver software. • Grades 12 • Prerequisite: Computer Applications
Business Management Theory • Students cover a wide range of business topics including Business Communication, Business Law, Ethics, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Accounting, and Economics. • Grades 11 • Prerequisite: Other Business Course
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP • BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP is a 4 credit course that provides seniors with a opportunity to learn more about the business world, the legal system, and personal interaction through work experience and educational programs and seminars. A major focus of the course is to complete an entrepreneurial idea and business plan and an Electronic Career Portfolio. College Summit is incorporated into the program. • Prerequisite: Business Management Theory and Advanced Microsoft Applications recommended
Club Association • Future Business Leaders of America • Enrolled in a Business Technology Education Class • Membership Fee $15.00 • Future Business Leaders of America–Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) is a co-curricular component of the Business Technology program. This student organization enhances classroom instruction, develops leadership skills, and provides opportunities for professional growth and service. FBLA dues are paid only one time per year, not per class.
