What’s in the Name? • Its actual derivation is uncertain, but many explanations exist. These stories about the very word “Canada” are indications of the diverse cultural background of the country. • Some say that it comes from the Spanish for “nothing here”.
Others suggest the name of Canada comes from one or more of the languages spoken by the First Nations (a term now use to describe original Canadians). • In Cree, it means “clean land”; • In Mohawk, it means “castle”; • In Iroquois, ka-na-ta means “village”.
Political Concept • Canadians chose to found a nation based on “peace, order and good government” while America was founded on the idea of individualism, that is, Canadians aspire to “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”
Government Structure • The biggest difference between Canada and the UK is that Canada is a federation. • It is ten provinces and two territories, each with their own government, which have joined to form one country.
The Canadian parliament is divided into a lower house, the House of Commons, and an upper house called Senate. Canadians vote in elections for people they want to represent them in the House of Commons. • These members of Parliament each fill a “seat” in the House of Commons, which represents a particular electoral district.
Political Parties • There are four major political parties in Canada: the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, New Democratic Party and Bloc Quebecois. • The present Prime Minister is Justin Trudeau from the Liberal Party and his father was a former Prime Minister.
International Relations • It was Canada that “invented” the concept of United Nations peacekeeping and convinced the international community to put pressure on South Africa’s apartheid policies.
In more recent years, partly through Canadian diplomatic efforts, things like women’s issues and the environment have been put on the international agenda. • Canada is also a member of the powerful Group 7, Group 20 and APEC.
