Aims of the field work • To acknowledge some of the pollution issues in HK, particularly their impact on the environment and the people. • To conduct an enquiry by working in groups to plan and carry out effective fieldwork to collect data on certain aspects of pollution from a number of different sites in HK (you will sit an assessment on fieldwork and enquiry techniques at the end of the topic). • To create a group presentation to include collation of the data, graphical representations of it in appropriate ways and analysis. • To carry out effective research to supplement the data given by teachers and collected by fieldwork. • To appreciate some of the complexities of the issue of pollution, the different viewpoints involved the difficulties and costs of large scale effective action and the consequences and impacts of our own actions as individuals.

Pollution type: Visual eg graffiti, ugly decaying buildings, street furniture etc Land/solid eg litter, waste, overflowing rubbish bins etc. Noise eg traffic, construction, air conditioners, machines etc Air eg exhaust fumes, smells, dust and smoke etc. Water eg sewage, idustrial waste, and oil spills etc. Factors affecting pollution: Distance out from the CBD Age of the area Population density of the area Trafficvolume and type of in the area Type of land use What type of pollution do we have in HK? What factors affect this pollution?

Possible hypotheses? • Older areas will have worse visual pollution problems than newer areas. • The levels of noise pollution will be affected by the volume and type of traffic. • The levels of air pollution will be related to the land use of the area. • Overall pollution levels are worse in areas nearer to Tsim Sha Tsui.
