Fundraising only is not CAS! "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime"
REFLECTION IS A MUST IN CAS ‘Experience without reflection is like a book unread’
*The 8 Learning outcomes • Increased awareness of own strengths & areas of growth • Undertaken new challenges • Planned & initiated activities • Worked collaboratively with others • Shown perseverance & commitment • Engaged with issues of global importance • Considered the ethical implications of actions taken • Developed new skills
FORMAT FOR GRADE 11 STUDENTS All CAS students must: • submit a proposal for each activity or project • have a supervisor for each activity/project • record reflections every time something significant happens • send a ‘ Supervisor Review’ at the end • individually monitored and mentored • 2 formal interviews a year & a CAS report/certificate
The benefits of CAS • The 8 learning outcomes • Creates ‘ a well-balanced student’ • Allows them to go out of their comfort-zone & grow • Can help greatly with other parts of the Diploma • Become better Global Citizens • Improved organisation, communication& leadership skills • They ‘stand-out’ for colleges/universities/future employers
CAS Report • ‘More and more, a good performance in CAS is becoming a vital part of university admissions…’ • ‘In the US and UK, it can actually enhance or damage the student’s chances because it makes the difference between merely an excellent student & an excellent student with evidence of a well-rounded personality, international-mindedness and concern for others…’
CAS Report • Many schools ask coordinators to provide a full CAS report for each student at the time of predicted grades submission or university (UCAS in particular!) • All or some of it then becomes part of the application process…
How can you support your child with CAS? • ‘CAS’ at the dinner table • Show interest in what they are doing • Encourage and praise - don’t lecture! • Have a look at their CAS Handbook • ‘Walk the talk’
