Facilitating Online Dialogue Monitor online activities & discussions Check discussion forums regularly • Ask clarifying questions • Ask participants to dig deep • Check for CASA Competencies Be available for questions and technical support
Facilitating Session 1: Online Review the Online Facilitation Tips On page 2 of the Facilitator Manual Read over Prep/Facilitator Involvement on page 3 Lead by example: be the first to post an introduction in Activity 1.1 Designate time to read volunteer introductions and thank them for joining CASA
Facilitating Session 1: Online Join the discussion by providing feedback, answering questions & encouraging participation Send reminders to volunteers who are slow starters or who have forgotten to complete activities Remind everyone about your first in-person session (date, time, location, etc.)
Facilitating Session 1: In-Person Review Advance Prep & Supplies checklist on pages 27-28 of the Facilitator Manual Make sure that all participants have completed the online activities Review the discussion forums, provide feedback, and remind participants to complete activities Follow the facilitator instructions for each activity
Facilitating Session 1: In-Person Discussions may be intriguing and time might get away from you. What can you do if this happens?
Facilitating Session 1: In-Person Create group agreements regarding time Encourage participants to continue discussions Refer participants to the Parking Lot • Both in the classroom and online • Answer questions in a timely manner • Encourage participants to put questions in the forum for the Experienced Volunteer Panel
Facilitating Session 1: In-Person Make copies of Case Studies materials Make copies of local materials • Mandated reporter laws & procedures, court report template, monthly report forms, etc. Consider supplementing the material with a video or guest speaker • If you choose to do so, keep track of your time
Facilitating Session 1: In-Person Remind participants about the online activities, deadlines & expectations Provide an overview of what’s coming up in the next session
Preparing for the Redd Case Introduce genograms in Session 4 or earlier Register participants on the National CASA E-Learning website Provide local court report template with suggested time frames/limits for each section
Preparing for the Redd Case Review the Redd Case prior to Session 5 Review participant progress Offer general suggestions or guidance in online forum to encourage and strengthen participants’ completion of the case study
Redd Case Feedback Instruct volunteers to email completed reports to you Review submitted reports Offer suggestions and improvements • Similar to a typical report review process • Be sure to give praise and encouragement
Redd Case Feedback Bring all reports to in-person class for distribution and discussion Share overall comments and areas for improvement Allow time for question and answer
Experienced Volunteer Panel Recruit 2 – 4 experienced volunteers to participate Solicit questions online from participants Prep experienced volunteers Facilitator Tips: • Guide the discussion using Q & A • Use interview format • Ask questions to get back on track
