Small Group discussion: What is the theme? (Each group write on the whiteboard) • Small Group Discussion: How did you determine the theme? What brought you to the theme? Write that on the board as well.
Theme • What is theme? • How do we discover a theme from a text? • What a theme statement should be: A statement not a single word. Ex. “Censorship” – no. “From Fahrenheit 451 the message seems to be that without access to information from books society will lack motivation and knowledge to make a positive influence in their communities.” • Constructing theme thesis statements – follow with explanation of why you believe the theme fits the story.

What event in the past shaped him to be the man he is in the story? • Answer questions 2-6 and question 9 in small groups.
Character Notes • what are their motivations? • What causes the characters to act the way they do? Take notes on how they speak, think, act, etc and infer a cause • Do the characters change or remain the same? If they change, what allows them to change? • How are characters similar and how are they different? In particular pay attention to Tom and Lily.
