Special Economic Zones (SEZs) • A Region with different economic laws than the country it is a part of • Goal -  foreign investment • Incentive: • Special tax incentives • Greater independence and increase in international trade activities. • 4 principles of an SEZ • Constructions foreign funded • Foreign or Jointly owned companies • Products are primarily export-oriented • Economic activities are primarily driven by market • SEZs politically separate and have limited autonomy • China has over 20 SEZs • Additional location: India, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Russia, and “North Korea”

Hong Kong • 7.2 million people • Center of trade, finance, and tourism • United Kingdom gained control of this area in 1842 • July 1, 1898, China leased HK to UK for 99 years • China demanded the return July 1, 1997. • Was this agreement good or bad for China and the United Kingdom? • HK is very diverse • Capitalist vs. Communist
