2. Who we are Established in 1984, we’re an independent humanitarian and development organisation. We are present in 51 countries (16 Affiliates and have relief & development programmes in 35 of those countries. Disaster risk reduction & resilience “We’re working with vulnerable communities across the globe, so that when the worst happens they cope better and get back on their feet faster” Innovative community-led disaster risk reduction initiatives in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan & Niger. 10. Emergency aid & assistance • 91 emergency project carried out in 2012 • UNHCR Camp management in Yemen, Iraq & Egypt. • 54 relief projects in Syria • and neighbouring countries. Our work included providing essential medical supplies and 30 ambulances, as well • as shelter, food, clothing and other vital items. • Rakhine State, Myanmar: building • shelters, tube wells, bathing facilities and latrines as well as delivering food parcels to vulnerable Muslim and Buddhist communities.

13. q Education In the developing countries, education is a social necessity. However, this right is often denied to poor people. In a single year, we help more than 146,000 children worldwide to unlock brighter futures through education: Haiti - £5 million project to build 5 schools (15,000 pupils) In Haiti Chechnya - access to school & training material provided to 3,000 people with hearing disability.

Livelihoods “We provide vulnerable people with the means to work themselves out of poverty, permanently.” Our Islamic micro-finance has now helped in excess of 10,000 people in Kosova (Pilot Country) and has been rolled out to several other countries including China, Indonesia, Sudan, Pakistan and Middle East and Balkans. Campaigning for change From our values: example of speaking out against injustice, we push for social change: In 2012, we lobbied donor governments on humanitarian and development aid for Afghanistan. We set out six clear recommendations improve food Security & tackle poverty, build livelihoods, ensure culturally sensitive education programmes, secure cost effectiveness and transparency in aid delivery.

Islamic Programmes Seasonal Programmes: In 2012, 2.8 million people in 29 countries benefited from Qurbani meat & 100,000 food parcels were distributed in our £3 million Ramadan programme Waqf (Endowements) & Finance Women received training and access to qardhasan - interest-free loans which are foregone if the beneficiary has difficulty paying it back - to set up successful small enterprises.
