Recycled shipping containers transformed into livable space. Jeffrey M. Saylor, AIA, LEED AP. Vice President. Abonmarche Consultants, Inc. Precious Cargo: Shipping Containers as Housing Solution Ken Flowers Director, M-TEC Lake Michigan College
A little history….. • Invented in 1950’s to standardize way of loading cargo from ships to warehouse…. • Malcolm McLean
Today….. • What should we do with all these containers?
WHY.. 10 year limited life span is dictated by ISO 9000 Commitment to green economy Influx of imported goods creates disposal problem (too costly to return empty) Reduced land-fill- steel is not compostable material Remaking housing with existing materials and at the same time, allowing people to build employability skills Melting down 8000 lb steel requires 8000kW-hours of energy; recycling into a home takes 400kW-hrs
Our Local Vision Training for LMC students in philosophy/practice of green construction while using a multitude of construction skills: • Basic Construction • Welding • Electrical • Plumbing • Insulation
Our Local Vision To create an opportunity for further discussion with our community on possible uses of re-purposed shipping containers.
Thanks Mini Grant funded by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Greenforce Initiative – To prepare the workforce in this region for the green economy, including facilitating access and success for lower-skilled adults.
