  1. TODAY • We will: • Demonstrate the scientific method with an online simulation experiment. • Learn/review the basic steps in the scientific method • Differentiate observation from inference. • Reveal how science continually advance by asking of new questions. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  2. Scientific Thinkology Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  3. WHAT IS SCIENCE? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  4. Features • Science deals with the natural world. • Scientists collect and organize information in a careful, orderly way, looking for patterns and connections between events • Scientists proposed explanations that can be tested by examining evidence • Definition: Science is an organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  5. The Steps • Observe the situation. • Ask a question. • Turn that question into a testable hypothesis. • Predict the outcome of your experiment. • Perform your experiment. • Analyze the results. • Evaluate your hypothesis: Test for validity. • Publish your findings in a scientificjournal Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  6. Activity 1: Mystery Bags • Put your hand in the bag [Do not look inside]. • Count the number of object(s) in your bag? • What are the objects in your bag(s)? • What type of observation is this? • How did you figure out the content(s) of your bag without looking. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  7. OBSERVATIONWrong observation can lead to wrong conclusion Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  8. Science start with:1. ObservationUsing one or more of the senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste to collect data or evidence. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  9. OBSERVATION • Quantitative: Numbers • And Qualitative: Colors, happiness, how excited you, and love • Observation is simply what you “see” happening. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  10. What We Use To Observe • Microscope • Magnifying lens/glasses • Telescope • Thermometer • Scales • Stethoscope • Our senses: Eyes, nose, ear, hand Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  11. Inference • A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. • What you “think” is happening. • An educated guess. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  12. Prior Knowledge Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  13. Activity 1 Hidden Wolves http://www.123opticalillusions.com/pages/opticalillusions28.php Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  14. Activity 2 Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  15. Activity 3 Who do you see? http://www.123opticalillusions.com/pages/albert-einstein-marilyn-monroe.php • Observe the picture for exactly 30 seconds. • What is your observation? • What is your inference? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  16. Activity 4 • Observe the picture for exactly 30 seconds. • What is your observation? • What is your inference? Count the Faces http://www.blacksunsoftware.com/illusion.html Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  17. Activity 5 More Count the Faces – Picture with Horses http://www.blacksunsoftware.com/illusion.html • Observe the picture for exactly 30 seconds. • What is your observation? • What is your inference? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  18. Activity 6 Old Man and Old Woman http://www.blacksunsoftware.com/illusion.html • Observe the picture for exactly 30 seconds. • What is your observation? • What is your inference? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  19. Activity 7 The Picture of Many Faces http://www.123opticalillusions.com/pages/opticalillusions16.php • Observe the picture for exactly 30 seconds. • What is your observation? • What is your inference? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  20. Class Challenge Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  21. Activity 6 Say out loud what the colors are and not what the words are The Color Quiz http://www.123opticalillusions.com/pages/opticalillusions36.php Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  22. How Observant Are You?Rate Yourself 3. I kicked b.u.t.t! 2. I am hot! 1. I am just cool! Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  23. Mystery Powder Analysis You are a crime scene investigator. A mystery powder was found on the floor of a crime scene and the shoes of a suspect. Can you use your power of observation to identify the powder? Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  24. The Scientific Method • Observe the situation. • Ask a question. • Turn that question into a testable hypothesis. • Predict the outcome of your experiment. • Perform your experiment. • Analyze the results. • Evaluate your hypothesis: Test for validity. • Publish your findings in a scientificjournal. Scientific Thinkology: Adesina

  25. Review/Closure • In designing experiment, scientists use the steps in the scientific method • Observation is the first step in the scientific method. • Observation can be qualitative or quantitative. • Wrong observation can lead to wrong conclusion. • Scientists test one variable at a time. • Dependent variable is on the Y-axis while Independent variable is on the X-axis.
