  2. SOUTH ASIA’S RAINY SEASON • Hundreds of people are killed each year, and hundreds of thousands are forced from their homes during South Asia’s rainy season. • Although the combination of rain and wind can be deadly, the rains are vital for agriculture.

  3. FLOODING IN ANDHRA PRADESH STATE • Three days of heavy rain and flash floods beginning on Friday, June 22, left 41 people dead and forced more than 55,000 from their homes in India's southern Andhra Pradesh state

  4. STRONG WINDS AND FLOODING IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN • Strong thunderstorms generated strong winds and heavy rainfall in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Sunday, June 24th. .

  6. KARACHI, PAKISTAN • Karachi is the country’s economic hub, a dynamic, but chaotic city. • Karachi is comprised of the “old” and the “new” with a mix of resilient and fragile infrastructure.

STRONG WINDS AND FLOODING IN KARACHI • Strong winds and flooding were dual disaster agents in Karachi. • Roofs and walls of many old and weak houses collapsed from the effects of wind. • 228 people were killed; some by falling sign boards. • Others were electrocuted when power cables fell into flooded streets in over 700 locations.

  8. EFFECT OF SEVERE WINDSTORMS IN KARACHI • Roofs and walls of many weak and/or old houses collapsed.

  9. FLOODING • Although floods can be devastating and deadly, the rains are vital for agriculture. • People in Karachi were electrocuted when power cables dislodged by strong winds fell into flooded streets.

  10. EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN KARACHI • Workers in Karachi struggled to clear roads of fallen trees and wreckage and to restore electricity. • People were relocated from coastal areas and other potentially vulnerable locations.

INDIA AND PAKISTAN PREPARE FOR MORE SEVERE WEATHER • Authorities in India and Pakistan prepared for the inevitable--more severe weather. • Indian officials ordered evacuation of tens of thousands at risk in low-lying areas after weekend storms and flooding that began on Friday, June 22, killed more than 350 people.
