Scottish Government Social Research 2007 • confirms that in-migration to Scotland is expected to increase, and that the economic and social importance and value of ESOL provision is a key factor in the successful integration of migrant workers.
The Adult ESOL Strategy for Scotland March 2007 • Requires partners to ‘Work with employers, …and others to support and develop English for vocational purposes’.
Project Background • Funded by Lifelong Learning Directorate of the Scottish Government 1/8 • 15 month duration 07-08 • AIS Model (Awareness; Identification; Solutions) • 10 Partnership areas +
Awareness Raising • Survey a sample number of employers to ascertain: • migrant workforce? • ESOL literacies learning issues? • addressing ESOL Literacies learning support for their workforce, and • interested in participating in Pilot Project?
Identification • Design, pilot and refine an assessment tool that enabled tutors to identify the literacies practices, purposes and needs of ESOL literacies learners in the workplace. • Select 20 workplaces in the public, private and voluntary sector in urban and rural settings to participate in the national pilot project.
