Japanese Cram School (3) Basic School System • Kindergarten: Three year private institution ( US Preschool to actual Kindergarten) • Elementary: 1st to 6th grades • Middle: 7th to 9th grades • High: 10th to 12th grades • Cram School: Private schools to prepare children for high school and college exams. Japanese Kendo (Sword Fighting) Club (5) School Systems Cont… • High School costs money, and it is required to take an exam to get in the school you want to go to • High Schools are designed to prepare you for college • Every Prefecture (like states) has their own college • Children devote much of their 9th and 12th grade years studying for exams. • In High School, each student is required to join at least one club Studying For Exams (6)

School Lunch (8) Daily Life • Elementary School • Kids walk to school alone, and school tarts at 8:30 • 2 hours of class • Recess at 10:20 to 10:40 • 2 hours of class • Lunch at 12:20 to 1:00 (Kids eat soup, fish, and rice) • Recess 1:00 to 1:40 • 1 hour of class, then school ends Elementary Class (9)

Japanese School Uniforms (11) Did You Know… • In most schools, uniforms are required • Sometimes students serve lunch • It is required to Join at least one club in high school • Students only change classes for homeroom • Every September or October, each school has Sports Day, where students compete in games, races, and dances. This commemorates the recovery of Japan, and it hosting the Olympics in the 1960’s • Japanese students only have March and August off, as well as other holidays
