Endodontic therapy extends to the dentists and the patients the opportunity to save teeth • Increased awareness among people • The introduction of x-rays • Development of latest instruments and techniques
Root canal treatment can be performed on any tooth of the dental arch
In Yemen there are no published studies that can give us the real information about the pulpally involved teeth that need endodontic treatment
Aims • To determine the needs of E.T. according to patient's sex and age. • To identify the most common etiological factors leading to the need of E.T • To identify the most frequent symptoms expressed by the patients. • To estimate the frequency of teeth needing E.T according to the location in the dental arches. • To identify the pulpal and periapical status of the teeth those need E.T.
An observational, retrospective survey (344) of dental sheets Conservative clinic Aden Faculty of Dentistry March to May 2010.
To evaluate the pulp status the following classification was used Normal pulp:asymptomatic, respond normally to pulp testing Reversible pulpitis:slight pain, after different stimulus. The teeth responded within normal limits to palpation and percussion. Irreversible pulpitis: sharp, dull, irradiated or diffuse spontaneous pain Pulp Necrosis: No response to the application of cold or heat stimuli or cavity test.
The presence of periapical lesions was evaluated as: Yes:When some radiolucency was observed in the radiograph No: When no observable radiographic changes
Quantitative analysis of the collected data was performed by using the statistical program SPSS, version 11.5. The relative frequency (%) of all variables studied was obtained and the relation between them was assessed by the nonparametric Chi-square test (p < 0.05)
Distribution of patients according to the needs of endodontic treatment
Statistical significance p<0.05 Ismail , Ismail, Syuhada; 2008
Statistical significance p<0.05 Sunders and Saunders 1988
The need of E.T. according to gender and age groups. Statistical significance p<0.05
Chief complaint expressed by patients treated at the Conservative Clinic
Pain was the most common chief complaint expressed by all patients regardless of the treatment they received The high prevalence of pain in patients who need endodontic treatment is attributed to the fact that most endodontic patient come to the clinic when their pulp is in the irreversible state
Etiological factors A.S. Al-Yahya, , H.A. Selirn, , E.E. Guile Serene and Spolsky 1981
Distribution of teeth that need ET according to location in the dental arches Ingle and Taintor 1976
Final Diagnosis of patients needed ET Serene and Spolsky 1995 Ørstavik and Hörsted-Bindslev 1993 ,
The results of this study indicate that • The needs of endodontic treatment in this group of patients was low, male needed endodontic treatment more than female. • Dental caries was responsible for the majority of cases that needed endodontic treatment. • Pain was the commonest complain of the patients that seek for dental treatment. • Maxillary teeth showed the highest percentage of affected teeth. • Most of the cases exhibited irreversible pulpitis followed by pulp necrosis.
Recommendation • To develop new researches concerning the need of endodontic in our population • Efforts should be held by to popularize the ET between people as a way for preserving pulpally involved teeth instead of extraction, through puplic dental health programs. • Improvement of ET depend on good educational and practical programs in the dental schools to minimize Iatrogenic cause for loosing tooth vitality
