The decline of social class. Class has been more important in the UK than other Western Countries. There were strong class based cultures, visible from clothing, accent and mannerisms. Not as important as it was in the late 1960’s. By Amey & Sarah.

  1. The decline of social class • Class has been more important in the UK than other Western Countries. • There were strong class based cultures, visible from clothing, accent and mannerisms. • Not as important as it was in the late 1960’s. By Amey & Sarah

  2. Arguments in support of the decline of class • Economic underpinnings to social differences are being eroded. • Cultures based upon class have dissolved. • Political action is no longer based around class organisations.

  3. Is class really in decline? • When asked ‘is there any other major group you identify with?’ Other than class, most people said no. 23.9% said they identified their own business or professional group, whilst others like age group, gender and ethnicity were much lower coming in at around 4.5%. • When asked if their job was just a means of earning a living, only 34% agreed.

  4. Goldthorpe and Marshall (1992), argue the best available research shows little change in the statistical relationship between class and the behaviours examined. ‘ There is no demonstrable decline in the association between class and other social practices’. (cited in Abercrombie, N, Ward, A, 2000).

  5. Criticisms • Method of data collection. • Time of the survey 1984-5. The period of the major coalminers strike. • Class is an outcome of every day social life but cant be measured.
