A Strong Beginning For Every Life: A Litany for Use in Congregational Worship Based on Psalm 139:13-16 Written by Rev. Amanda Bakale
Leader Creator and Sustainer of all life, in the beginning and now, you call forth all that is. Each life. Each creature. Each day. We thank you for your generous love to each of us. People For you created my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Leader You made each of us in your image. Each man and woman, girl and boy. From the moment we are conceived in our mother’s body, you know us and love us. We thank you for the breath in our lungs and the life you have given us. People I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Leader Son of God, Son of Mary, our God born to a poor mother in difficult circumstances, we pray for all mothers and families here in our community and around the world who hunger, who hurt, and who long for strong beginnings for the children they love. People Your works are wonderful. I know that full well.
Leader You gathered children to you - blessing them, welcoming them, loving them without reservation. May we follow your example as we care for, love, and support the children here with us and around the world who need the basic necessities for a full and healthy start to life. People My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Leader Holy Spirit, Breath of God, move our hearts and equip our hands to work together for the good of mothers and children everywhere, for the good of families and communities near and far - to alleviate suffering, meet needs, and empower women and men to raise up children strong and healthy. People Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
Leader May we never take the life you have given us for granted. May we work faithfully to help others live a full and healthy life from the very beginning. And may we trust the power of your kingdom to restore hope, offer peace, and change stories of scarcity to stories of abundance. People In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we pray. Amen. Quotations of Psalm 139:13-16 from the NIV 2011 translation.
