Out of the 5 MMTPA of Methanol produced by this project, 1.3 MMTPA will be sold in the local market, and the remaining 3.7 MMTPA will be used to produce downstream chemicals such as: • 1 MMTPA Acetic acid • 1 MMTPA Di-methyl Ether (DME), and • 0.65 MMTPA Poly-olefins (Polypropylene and Polyethylene) • As a by-product, sulphur in coal will be recovered as 0.13 MTPA solid sulphur. The CTP project involves the following components: • Coal to Urea • Coal to SNG Plant • Thermal Power Plant Based on Coal • The initiative can potentially generate employment opportunities and significant money for Chhattisgarh. Importance of the Coal to Urea project • The Coal to Urea project is of the utmost importance for India because it: • Encourages the ecologically sustainable usage of domestic coal. • Reduces dependence on imported natural gas for urea production. • Reduces urea imports by 12.7 LMT (Lakh Metric Tonnes) per year, saving foreign exchange. • Helps India meet its CoP-21 Paris Agreement commitments. • To create urea, the facility employs coal gasification. The CO2, H2, and N2 coal gasification products may be utilized to make synthetic ammonia and urea. This removes the requirement for air separation and the usual, energy-intensive coal-to-gas conversion process.
