A Milestone In Adani Group’s Power Transformation Journey THE ADANI GODDA PROJECT
The Adani Godda power project is one of the most exceptional thermal power projects taken up by the Adani Group in the international power sector. Adani Power Jharkhand Limited which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited is responsible for taking up the operations of the project. This project has helped Bangladesh achieve energy security in its various areas. It has also ensured that the living conditions of the people change for the better.
ADANI GODDA BANGLADESH PROJECT: AN OVERVIEW • The Adani Godda project achieved commercial operations dates (COD) of its second unit on 26th July 2023. The reliability run tests including the commercial operation tests of the second unit of this project were completed on 25th June 2023 in the presence of the Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh and BPDP. This project has a total capacity of 1,600 MW. It is built using ultra-supercritical technology and is responsible for supplying power to Bangladesh. The first unit of the project also achieved its commercial operations date on 6th April 2023.
As per the power purchase agreement signed, APJL is expected to supply 1,496 MW net capacity of power from its 2×800 MW thermal power plant for 25 years through a 400 kV dedicated transmission system which is connected to the Bangladesh power grid. The electricity supplied from the Adani Godda power plant brought about a positive impact on Bangladesh's power situation. It reduced the average power cost to a significant extent. The relationship between India and Bangladesh also strengthened. Although the project operations received a setback during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Adani Group continued to carry out its project operations with full force. The project is also equipped with various environmental-friendly techniques to ensure that the impact on the environment is reduced. It is installed with a Flue Gas Desulphurizer (FGD) and a Selective Catalytic Reconverter (SCR) system for minimising emissions. The project is also built in alignment with the norms set aside by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.
CONCLUSION • In the past few months, the Adani Godda project has been experiencing a lot of challenges. This has been mainly because of the massive downfall in Bangladesh’s economy. Because of this, there have been rising concerns about debts as Bangladesh is not in a position to pay for the electricity which is being supplied to it by the Adani Group. However, even amidst the challenges, the Adani Group is continuing to supply electricity to Bangladesh so that the country’s energy demands are met. Once the situation normalises, the global conglomerate will continue to extend its presence in Bangladesh’s power sector so that the people are able to lead their lives without any hindrance.
