Types of Scale • There are three types of map scales • They are • Word Scale or Direct Statement • Line Scale • Representative Fractions
Word Scale • Uses words to describe the relationship between a distance on a map and a specific distance on the earth. • Example 1 cm to 10km means that 1 cm on the map represent 10 km on the earth’s surface
Line Scale • This is a line located at the bottom of maps • Use the line scale to find the distance between two places
How to use linear scale • To determine the distance on a map measure the distance on the map. • However, do not measure with a ruler if looking for accuracy
Follow these steps to find the actual distance between places using the line scale
Representative Fraction Scale (RF) • This fraction is a ratio. • The fraction is shown as follows: • 1:50 000 • The RF means that 1 unit on the map represents 50 000 of the same units on the earth’s surface • Units may be any measure • No matter what units are used the correct distance can be calculated • For example cm in Canada or inches in United States
Representative Fraction Scale (RF) • This is important since everyone in the world can use this scale regardless of language or units of measurement in their country
Therefore, if the RF is 1:50 000, then 1 cm on the map represents 50 000 cm on the earth’s surface • We usually want to know distances in Kilometers. • To change the centimeters to kilometers we must convert one unit of measure to another
Scale Conversion • You need to know the following information: • 1 KM =1000m • 1 m = 100 cm • 1 km = 100 000 cm
Converting an RF Scale to Direct Statement Scale • Divide the denominator by the unit you wish. • For example to change centimeters into kilometers you would use the following process: • 1cm = 50 000 cm • 1 cm = (50 000 cm ÷ 100 000) km • 1 cm = .5 km
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 2 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 3 2 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 4 3 2 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 5 4 3 2 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 5 4 3 2 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing to cm and km count back 5 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 5 4 3 2 1 • Move the decimal over 5 points • Therefore 1 cm = .5 km
Change to m count back 2 • Changing to cm and m count back 2 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 1
Change to m count back 2 • Changing to cm and m count back 2 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 0 0 2 1
Change to m count back 2 • Changing to cm and m count back 2 • For example • 1: 50 000 • 1: 5 0 0 .0 0 2 1 • Move the decimal over 2 points • Therefore 1 cm = 500 m
Converting a Direct Statement to R.F. Scale • Multiply the number by 100 000 • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1cm = (2.5 x 100 000) cm • 1 : 250 000
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1 2
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1 2 3
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1 2 3 4
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1 2 3 4 5
A dirty little Secret • Changing from km to a representative fraction count back 5 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 km • 1: 2 . 5 0 0 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 • Thus 1cm represents 2.5km as • a direct statement is 1:250 000
Changing from m to a representative fraction count back 2 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 m • 1: 2 . 5 0 1
Changing from m to a representative fraction count back 2 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 m • 1: 2 . 5 0 1 2
Changing from m to a representative fraction count back 2 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 m • 1: 2 . 5 0 1 2
Changing from m to a representative fraction count back 2 • For example • 1 cm represents 2.5 m • 1: 2 . 5 0 1 2 • Thus 1cm represents 2.5 m as • a direct statement is 1: 250
