What is Talent Development? • The official story: • Established – 1968. • The mission -- recruit, support, & retain students of color & disadvantaged students from in-state. • The students -- high schools, and both community & faith based agencies.
Talent Development:Before the collaboration • [TD’s] connection to the library goes back to 1968 • Taught by TD staff • Unaware that they could ask for instruction assistance.
TD & the Library:A connection is made • Scavenger hunts and other methods used. • It worked…but it wasn’t perfect. • 1996 -- Sylvia Krause (Head of Reference) contacted Sharon about instruction.
TD & Library: 1998 - Present • We want the students to learn basic system literacy. To make the library a place that they’re comfortable walking through the doors. And [create] connections…to the staff.
Pre-Matriculation Students: The Blue-print • Basic Library Literacy • Critical thinking • Library catalog • Periodical databases • Develop comfort level with physical library • Make connections with Library staff
Pre-Matriculation Students: construction begins • Designed a matrix for classes • Organized a cadre of faculty librarians to teach and connect with Talent Development • Added availability of Grad Students and Subject Specialists
Talent Development: 1998 - Present • Students more willing to come over to the library and ask questions and not wait for the computer tutors to come around.
Talent Development Program:2002-2003 • Goals: • Create opportunities for future information literacy librarians • Increase exposure of Talent Development Students to Library Research
Collaboration: A structural necessity • 2002 -- GSLIS Prism Fellows • 2003 -- GSLIS Professional Field Experience, (PFE)
Talent Development: Summer 2003 • Experience…? • Symbiotic classroom relationship • Authentic Teaching Style • Personal goal: Documentation – a clear base for others to build upon… or to demolish.
Talent Development:Students – Summer, 2003 • Everything was pretty much covered. I will come back to you if I need help. • Does a book have to returned where it’s checked out? • When did it become so difficult? Card catalogs are a lost art!!
TD & Library:Still revising the blueprint • Have the library sessions woven in more closely into our writing program over the summer. • Have the TD tutors sit in on the library sessions.
Surveying the site:Preparing for TD 2004 • Meeting “the crew” • Literature review Manuel, Kate. “Teaching Information Literacy to Generation Y.” Journal of Library Administration, 36.1/2, (2002): 195-217. • Building upon last year’s successes
The Blue Print:A Workable Plan • Tour/attendance • Introduction • HELIN lecture/exercise • LC Call# Portion • Scholarly v. Popular Talk/Exercise • Database Lecture/Exercise • Conclusion/Feedback
