Tiananmen Square Massacre, 1989 In spring of 1989, student protestors from across China gathered in Beijing at Tiananmen Square (considered the heart of China) to carry out civil disobedience in support of democratic reforms. China’s communist government responded by attacking with troops and tanks, resulting in the deaths of thousands of unarmed protestors.
