Housing Application and Roommate Matching Process For New Incoming Residents Residence Halls, Suites & Apartments Fall 2011 – Spring 2012 Academic Year Must Be an Eligible New Incoming Resident to Participate

Introduction New Incoming Freshmen The Department of Housing and Residential Life (HRL) currently manages twenty traditional residence halls, three apartment complexes and the Diversity House, exclusively for undergraduate students who wish to live on-campus at URI. These residences are conveniently located between the academic heart of campus – just steps from the University Library, Student Center, Dining Halls, the URI student post office and within walking distance to Kingston campus classrooms and offices – and the University’s recreational, entertainment and athletic facilities. Fifty-five hundred residents live in these on-campus facilities, three thousand of whom are freshmen. Further, ninety-two percent of all enrolled freshmen live on-campus at URI. Freshmen who are eligible for on campus housing through HRL will live with two other freshmen roommates in one of the thirteen traditional corridor based residence halls that comprise URI’s Freshman Village. These are co-ed buildings in which female and male rooms are arranged along either side of a centrally located corridor or hallway. These residence halls have been selected for Freshmen because their design encourages the kind of social interaction that helps new students make a smooth transition to their new home at URI. The average ratio of staff members to residents in these buildings is 1 to 25. There are two styles of buildings in the Freshman Village from which students may choose. Style #1 offers traditional, male and female specific, hallway bathrooms that are shared by the members of the hallway, and are maintained by the building’s custodial staff. Style #2 (also referred to as suite style) offers semiprivate bathrooms that are shared by the residents of each pair of adjacent rooms along a hallway, and must be maintained by the residents who share the bathroom. These means that the residents of the room must clean the bathroom themselves. These bathrooms are also male and female specific. Freshmen are invited to request specific roommates. Instructions for requesting roommates online has been provided in this presentation. Freshmen may also have a car on campus, however parking is limited. For more information on parking services for residents at URI visit uri.edu/parking.
Introduction To be eligible for on campus housing, first-semester incoming freshmen must pay both their enrollment and housing deposit and submit their housing application by The May 1st deadline. Information on how to apply for on- Campus housing and a University Meal Plan and to pay both deposits appears in the next section of this presentation. The combined amount for the Enrollment and On-Campus Housing deposit for instate, as well as out of state is $500.00 Living Learning Communities (LLC) group students, who are in the same academic college, have the same major or who have similar academic interests, in a residence hall, or several residence halls. The majority of the students residing in an LLC not only share common academic interests and attend some classes together, but also form study groups, share access to a Resident Academic Mentor (RAM), where applicable, and attend faculty sponsored programs within their residence. A RAM provides academic support to all residents of the LLC. Students living in an LLC not only make friends with other students with whom they share common academic but also with those with whom they will establish lifelong friendships. The College based Living and Learning Communities in place for the fall 2011 – spring 2012 academic year are: CELS, Arts & Sciences, Human Science & Services, Undeclared Major, Nursing and Engineering. For more information on the Living and Learning Communities that will be available for the 2011- 2012 academic year please visit housing.uri.edu. Transfer Students Although Transfer students are not guaranteed housing in the Residence Halls, Suites or Apartments, they are encouraged to complete a Transfer Student Application. Transfer students will be assigned to a room a space available basis only, in the order of the receipt of their application. These students will be contacted by HRL as spaces become available. It is for this reason that they should not pay the $200 Housing Deposit until instructed to do so by HRL. Please direct questions to a HRL Customer Service Representative at 401-874-4151. Transfer students who are interested in living on campus should also check with the FMA at 401-874-2557 to determine if space is available in any of the fraternities or sororities. For more information on other on-campus housing options for upperclassmen and for transfer students please visit housing.uri.edu.

This is an example of how roommate match problems are displayed in MyHousing. Freshmen should ideally be forming groups of three freshmen..as freshmen will be assigned to triple rooms.
This is a completely matched group of 4 residents. Again, this is only an example of what a correct roommate match looks like in MyHousing If you matches are correct then you are done. You may continue to change roommate requests through July 5th
