  2. Summary • Perseus’s grandfather, King Acrisius, had been warned by an oracle that Perseus would kill him. • Locks up his daughter Danae in a tower • Zeus takes pity and impregnates her in a gold shower Danae bears a son, Perseus Danae with Eros by her side as the gold showers down

  3. Summary • So Acrisius put Perseus and his mother in a chest and threw it into the sea. • The chest drifted to Seriphus, where King Polydectes ruled the island. • He fell in love with Danae, who did not love him back.

Summary • Polydectes planned to force Danae to marry him, but couldn’t without getting rid of Perseus, who protected his mother. • Polydectes challenged Perseus to bring back the head of Medusa. • The gods decided to help Perseus on his journey by giving him gifts. • Hermes: magical sword • Athena: reflective shield, Aegis • Steals the Graeae’s (Gray Women) eye for the location of the North nymphs • Nymphs give him Invisibility Cap, magic wallet, and winged sandals

Summary of Story (cont.) • Perseus killed Medusa, • one look at her could turn you into stone • On his way home, Perseus pitied Atlas and turned him into stone to make it easier to carry the world. • He rescued Andromeda from being sacrificed to a sea monster and married her. • He stopped by a discus contest and competed. • Accidentally swung the discus in the wrong direction and killed his grandfather, Acrisius, fulfilling the prophecy. • When he arrived back in Seriphus, he killed Polydectes by showing him the head of Medusa.

Motifs and Themes • Rags to Riches: • Perseus washed ashore on the island of Seriphos, but had no money (rags) and in the end Perseus claims his throne in his grandfather’s kingdom (riches) • What goes around comes around: • Polydectes tries to get rid of Perseus by sending him on a quest to get Medusa’s head but when Perseus comes back and shows Polydectes the head, Polydectes is turned to stone.
