Francis of Sales • French Roman Catholic leader and preacher • Worked to win back the district of Savoy in France from Calvinism-as a result, most people returned to the Catholic Church • Founded a religious teaching order for women
Women and the Church • Women began to take on more active roles in the Church • Before the renaissance-lived in private convents • By middle ages- nuns could help the poor, the orphaned and the sick • Mary Ward of England began a network of schools for girls throughout Europe-Missionary influence was later formally recognized by the Church
Teresa of Avila • Considered the most famous female spiritual leader • Born in Spain in 1515 • Became a nun at age 20 • Father opposed to this idea but she ran away to a convent around 1536 • Thought that current church practices were too lax so she followed her own new strict rules for fasting, praying and sleep • Had deep spirituality, deep visions of Christ and fervor for the Catholic Church-inspired many would-be protestants to remain in the Church
