Catalonia: Excellent Quality of Life in a Strategic Location With one of the highest standards of living in Europe, Catalonia offers a first-class setting for living and doing business.
Facts and Figures Catalonia’s population is similar to those of countries like Denmark, Bulgaria and Austria. Its GDP is greater than Ireland’s and Finland’s and similar to those of Denmark, Greece and Austria. It exports more than Portugal and the Slovak Republic and about as much as Finland and Hungary. Barcelona in Rankings Barcelona has consolidated its position as the 4th best European city in which to locate a business and the best city in Europe in terms of the quality of life of its workers, according to the study conducted annually by Cushman & Wakefield, and has also maintained a low position in the world ranking of cities with a high cost of living. Barcelona has maintained its position as the best city since 1996, beating other European cities such as Paris, London and Madrid. Barcelona has maintained its position as the best city since 1996, beating other European cities such as Paris, London and Madrid. Barcelona is seen as one of the cities that does the most to improve. Major Scientific Infrastructures First and only particle accelerator in Southern Europe. It can be used for the manufacture of micro items and drugs and to develop new materials for industry. The most powerful supercomputer in Spain and one of the most powerful in Europe. It is used for supercomputing projects in the life sciences, biotech and chemical industries, among others. BSC is currently working on a new supercomputer 100 times more powerful that will be operative in 2012. Dedicated to product development in the automotive industry, it offers engineering, testing and homologation services to the worldwide industry. The largest public microelectronics research and development centre in Spain, and whose main activity is R&D in silicon-based micro- and nano-electronics.

Universities Quality Education • 12 public and private universities • More than 227,000 students • More than 400 different degrees Two of the top three Spanish universities in terms of educational quality are in Catalonia (UdL and UPF). In the same ranking, the UdG comes in seventh place and the UAB in eleventh. The UAB was the university that improved the most. The UPC and the UB are among the top three universities in terms of the quality of doctorate programmes.
