AWG Unit 6: Writing Critiques • What is the purpose of a critique? • What are some of the major types of critiques (what do we write critiques on/about)? • Book Reviews • Article Evaluations • Reaction Papers (Not addressed specifically in this lesson, but will contain similar aspects as the other types) • Others: Literature reviews, summaries, research papers… • Why might you personally write one? • What are some of the challenges involved? • Not being overly critical, using “cautious” language • Organization
Evaluative Language Adjectives • useful, important, interesting, insightful, significant, comprehensive, practical, detailed, up-to-date • inconsistent, restricted, misleading, impractical • “The author provides _____ background information on . . .” • “The report is _______ in the way it analyzes the data.” Okay to use 1st person • It seems to me that . . .
Some important notes: Be fair and reasonable • Acknowledge both the positives and negatives • It’s easy to criticize, but harder to come up with a solution! • Negative comments: Praise + “suggestion” clause • “While he makes interesting observations, he could have made his argument stronger if he had . . .” • “I appreciated the examples that [Author’s name] provided, but personally, I would have hoped for her to provide more detail on . . .”
Write one strength and one weakness of the textbook that we are using for this class. Show it to your partner.
Book Reviews: A Professional Critique • With a partner complete Task 7 (pg. 243). • Discuss whether you think the statements are reasonable (fair) or unreasonable.
Exercise Now scan the book review for Hedgers and Boosters. Please underline or highlight them. • Hedgers- soften an opinion (or request) • “It’s hard to accept that . . . “ • Boosters- strengthen an opinion (usually positive comments) • “His contribution to the field is clearly unmatched”
