  2. Born in Topeka, Kansas 1917 • She died December 3rd2000, because of cancer at age 83 Gwendolyn Brooks

Brooks and her family moved to Chicago, Illinois six weeks after she was born (as part of the Great Migration) • Gwendolyn attended three different high schools mainly because of racial issues. • By age 16 she had published 75 poems! Her first poem was published at age 13 by a children magazine. • In 1936 Brooks graduated from Wilson junior college Early Life

  4. Brooks wrote over 20 books of poetry • One book in particular was Annie Allen (1994) for which she received the Pulitzer prize. • Gwendolyn brooks was the first African american to win the Pulitzer Prize.

  5. In 1968 Brooks was named Poet Laureate for the state of Illinois • From 1985-86 Brooks was the consultant in poetry to the library of congress • Brooks also received the Frost medal, the Shelly memorial award and many other awards as well.

Brooks was married to Henry Lowington Blakely Jr. in 1939 , they had two children, Henry & Nora. • Brooks is also buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island • President John Kennedy invited her to read at a Library of Congress poetry festival in 1962 • In 1988 she was inducted into the national women hall of fame Personal life

  7. A street in Bronzeville (1945) was an instant success leading her to be selected one of Mademoiselle magazine's "Ten Young Women of the Year,"

Brooks was surrounded by prejudice everywhere including school which is why she transferred from Hyde park High School an all white school to an all black school Wendell Philips , which was believed to influence most of her writing. • Since brooks was born around the 50’s she still maintained the idea of a nuclear family, with herself coming from two parents and the later marrying and having two kids herself .
