1956 • The video camera as it is known today is able to record images and sound. The first demonstration of this capability took place on 14 april 1956. ray dolby, charlesginsberg, and charlesanderson invented the first machine to record both images and sound. This invention sold for approximately $75,000 US Dollars (USD) apiece.
1867 The first machine patented in the United States that showed animated pictures or movies was a device called the "wheel of life" or "zoopraxiscope". Patented in 1867 by William Lincoln, moving drawings or photographs were watched through a slit in the zoopraxiscope. However, this was a far cry from motion pictures as we know them today. Modern motion picture making began with the invention of the motion picture camera.
1980s • The first video slow motion camera was invented by NAC in the mid 1980s. A decade later they made the first digital colour slow motion camera the MemrecamCi. With the help of UK TV engineers, Top Teks and Bob Sharpe from Image Diagnostics we turned this camera into a camcorder with the addition of a viewfinder, TV style zoom lens and shoulder pad.
JVC GR-C1 - 1984. First VHS single-unit video camcorder. This camcorder used Compact VHS tape which JVC introduced in 1982. This was the same tape as standard VHS and the same recording format, but in a cassette which was only 1/3 the size. This compact cassette could be inserted into in a full-sized VHS adaptor shell so that it could be played back in any VHS machine. In this way, JVC achieved miniaturization without compromising compatibility with older equipment. Immortalised in the movie 'Back To The Future' (photo above on right), it is the original, definitive camcorder.
