  4. Left / Right (politics) • Left: in favor of radical changes/reforms, new ideas (socialism) • Right: in favor of status quo, or things going back to the past

Unidad Popular • Group of left-wing political parties: liberals, socialists, radicals • Nationalization: US mining / businesses OUT of Chile • Collectivization: Chilean workers/farmers collectively SHARE plantations and mines • Redistribution of wealth: raise minimum wage for lower-class workers

  7. Salvador Allende • Chilean doctor, leader of the Unidad Popular party • Narrowly elected president of Chile in 1970 (wins 36% of the vote) • Nationalizes Chile’s economy. • Appoints Augusto Pinochet as top military general.

  8. September 11th, 1973 • Pinochet and other right-wing generals are concerned by the radical changes Allende’s socialism party is making. • Together with the CIA, leads a military coup to overthrow Allende in September 11th, 1973. • Allende killed, military dictatorship is set up.

  9. Classwork • Cut and paste the 12 different examples of left/right politics into your notebook. • Divide up the reading (A and B) with your partner and answer the questions in your notebook. Share out and write down each others’ answers.This will be checked off tomorrow at the beginning of class for your CW grade today.

  10. Homework (Due Wednesday 11.14) • Finish the reading (BOTH A and B) you were assigned today in class. All terms should be fully defined and explained. • Have the video notes filled out and ready for me to check off. WRITE THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
