  1. Exploring Chapter One – ‘Christmas Eve’ What expectations might readers have of the opening chapter from the title, ‘Christmas Eve’? Does the chapter live up to these expectations? Explain your answer. What is the effect of using first person narrative? What is the overall effect of Arthur taking so long to tell his story? Write down three quotations which create an effect of tension and suspense.

  2. Exploring Chapter Two – ‘A London Particular’ When does the story begin – give the time, day and month. Describe the weather – what effect does it have? Why do you think the writer begins this chapter with very similar information to the first? What do we learn about MrsDrablow from Bentley’s conversation with Arthur? Is there anything to make the reader suspicious about what might happen later on? What is the effect of the last sentence of the chapter?

  3. Exploring Chapter Three – ‘The Journey North’ Why do you think Hill describes Arthur as initially thrilled to be going by train up north and then, increasingly, finding it more unpleasant? Note down two descriptions Arthur gives of the weather or surroundings as he journeys north. What is the effect of the language he uses? What more do we learn about MrsDrablow and her circumstances from the conversation between Arthur and Samuel Daily? Why do you think Hill has used names such as Nine Lives Causeway, Eel Marsh House, Gapemouth tunnel and Crythin Gifford for the area where the story takes place? How do you think Arthur is feeling at the end of this chapter? What gives you this impression?

When Arthur first sees the woman in black what are his first impressions of her and what are his feelings towards her? (pp.53-55) What is the effect of the language Hill uses to describe the children lined up against the railings? (p.56) How does Mr Jerome react when Arthur asks him to identify the woman in black? Why might this reaction be important?
