HUSSAIN • I have been a member since September 2009 • The Forum that YouthScape held gave me a new perspective on how to help youth in Calgary • I joined and now really enjoy what I do on YouthScape • We engage youth all over Calgary and allow them to jumpstart their projects
MURTUZA • Joined the YouthScape Calgary in June 2008 about a year and a half • Always wanted to get involved with other young people in a group where youth like me can have a voice and be treated respectfully • By volunteering I have the opportunity to give back to the community, which I love to do
The Big Idea • YS Calgary idea is to build a strong community where all young people are respected as citizens of the community. • As a result, Calgary will be a excited place to live. • The City of Calgary haveresources with knowledgeand experiences in the area of youth. • Therefore,YouthScape idea was started from a positionof strength.
The Big Idea • In the path reaching our goal & dream, • which is gradually taking shape. • We are using a youth lead and adult supported model. • Youth are involve in all aspects of community project. • From the grass roots engagement of “marginalized youth” at a project level to the influence of youth at a systems level through their projects
The Big Idea • For past 2 years, our focus was on Transportation choosing one “system” to work within • Work is being done to achieve that long term goal of building resilient communities through youth engagement. • This community is needs more importance in the intergenerational connection theme.
Go Grant Program • Give money to do something in the community that matters to individual • Youth-led projects • Community-based project • school, community or neighborhood Process: Application Project in place SC discussion SC taking Lead on the Project
About Funding • Have to be targeted groups directly & indirectly • Open Granting Project Model All year round • Grantees have to follow the criteria to be qualify • Go Grant program is develop to make changes in our community by providing funding and other support from SC members. • Youth-led community-based project
About Funding • Go-Grant applicant can receive up to $ 2,500 to make difference by their project. • With the YS facilitator and as a Steering Committee member, its our responsibility to make sure the criteria are met and final decisions are highly affected regarding to the project
Challenges • Steering Committee Commitment • Participation of Steering Committee • Community isn’t ready for YS Absorption • Go grant ProcessPromoting • Grants Not marginalized • Many Facilitators Changes Making it happen
Promoting the YS – Go Grants • Forum – happened last August • Steering Committee - Word of mouth • High school presentation – done by CYFC • Poster around the city • Organizations/ Agencies • CYFC – spread the word • Website • Small Post cards • Facebook
